A film of deceptively outspoken contemporary relevance, this is cinema at its most alert, alarming and alive.

This film is full of simple yet ethereal beauty! Every frame could be a painting in itself, the animation is airy and unique overflowing with a bright rainbow of colors. This is truly a spiritual journey into the great mystery of the unknown. The exquisite animation transports you to a dreamlike realm and captivates your attention (at least those who are patient enough to allow the imagery to work its magic). There is no dialog, but the music paints an enchanting underwater story. The hypnotic scenes are strong and overladen with metaphors. " De Profundis" is a ode to the powers of love and death, synchronicity, and dreams, if you are interested in philosophy or an animation buff this is definitely a must see!

"De Profundis" (From the sea) is the first movie directed by Miguelanxo Prado (Who is responsible for the character designs of the animated series of "Men in Black") this is a unique, beautiful film, that shares a wonderful music, with a stylish, very attractive style of animation. Just like "Fantasia" there is no dialog in this film, only images and music. And what a beautiful imagery! Every single scene of this film is a work of art: While the story seems to be something very simplistic (Some parts reminded a lot to fairy tales, like "The Little Mermaid") the colors, the shapes, the characters have a unique, poetic look. I recommend a lot of patience for the viewer: This film is very, very slow paced, and the some parts of the movie could be boring and dull for the casual viewer. However, if you see you are able to handle the slowness of the scenes, you will be widely rewarded, because not many films are able to evocate so deep feelings as this one. Not even those that have a higher budget. This is a visual poem, and shows us feelings and dreams instead of a concrete story. I highly recommend this film to any fan of the genre of animation.

Thrill seekers and those with vanishingly short attention spans should avoid this film. Folks who enjoy art and dreamlike stories will enjoy it. It invokes the format of a dream very effectively to engage viewers in their own relation to dreaming. We need more of this kind of media. The choice to avoid language is an important part of how the film becomes evocative. Its simplicity is deceptive, for it can draw from the viewer a 'deep,' lasting, and contemplative response. (There, I avoided flaming the previous incredibly obtuse comment.) In some ways the work is a platform for bringing its art and music to the fore, and the animation and story are containers for that: the colors, art, and music all work together excellently. The film won several awards, and appreciative reviews.

First of all, this is not an animated movie. Unless you think of animation as two similar but different shapes of a body joined together by a computer animation, and than put in a loop. Secondly there is no story. Only music, roughly incorporated into the scenes that are endlessly repeating. If someone making an animated film wants so spare on animation costs, this is the film he or she should look up for. At the end, I could easily retell what was going on, but if you should ask me about motivation the characters had, the overall plot, I would then remain silent. The "artyness" of this film just pokes your eyes out. Definitely a must-not-see!
