A film of deceptively outspoken contemporary relevance, this is cinema at its most alert, alarming and alive.

The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.

There are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.

It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.

This movie is very good, especially compared to other similar-themed anime made during the same era. It has much more 'realism,' in spite of the sci-fi scenario, and less goofiness like stare-downs and people flying through the air and remaining motionless at the same time.In a way, it's more like a regular war / action / spy movie all wrapped into one and published in anime format. You get terrorism, mind-control, secret agents, an alien race that refer to themselves as 'gods' and claims to be mankind's clreators, quite convincing alien technology ship and aircraft action, close combat including power-armor, a traumatized hero and more. The story, however, is pretty straight-forward and not confusing in a bad way, as in many other anime. What I like most about it is how the movie's creators very effectively gave it an epic feel, as if it were part of something bigger. The references to the past are well-done, well-tied into the story and makes the viewer long for more. It could well have been made into a Daisenki universe anime trilogy plus an ova series. Actually, after watching it, I googled if there were something like that, sadly it turns out there is only the movie. One could argue that the movie does not have the production standards to warrant a score of 9, but I think that this actually adds to its charm. If you like serious sci-fi military-themed anime and don't mind or actually appreciate the 80's / early 90's feel, then give this one a view.

The movie really needs more battle sequences. The story is slow I don't think it's bad but it could be better. There are some very interesting parts but there are not many. In conclusion the film is not bad but not really good either.

This movie is BY FAR the worst thing I've ever seen animated (and that is saying A LOT). Let's consider the story for a moment (contains spoilers, if you're going to watch this "film" you may want to skip this part.)1. Aliens are attacking the people living on mars (okay, pretty standard.) 2. The humans can't seem to do ANYTHING to hurt the aliens (alright...I can SORTA buy that...but it seems odd that they would keep sending thousands of people to die if they can't even scratch them.) 3. The aliens have a stealth land-based carrier named "Hell" (maybe this just translated poorly, but I even let that slide.) 4. The humans have ONE battleship that's better than all the rest (standard for anime). 5. The main character's girlfriend is being mind controlled by aliens (okay...) 6. Alien mind control turns her into a Nymphomaniac (HOLD ON A SECOND!) 7. A government agent is spying on him having wild sex with his girlfriend, tells him "Hey, I saw you having sex the other night", and then proceeds to eat his mayonnaise. (WHAT?!?!?!) 8. She turns into an alien, he kills her, then they have a ridiculous boat chase during which he kills the guy who ate his mayonnaise (HUH?!?!) 9. The whole city gets destroyed, but thankfully the one battleship escapes (EVERYONE'S DEAD?!) 10. The aliens are really girls. (ARGH!) 11. They shoot them and they die. (Nevermind.) 12. The alien motherbrain attacks them with delusions and rainbow colored light. But the good guys win anyway. (Fine, whatever.is it over yet?) 13. YEA!Let's forget for a second that the plot is c**p, the characters are both two dimensional AND unbelievable, the background story is ridiculous, and a major plot device was NYMPHOMANIA...other than that this was a good movie.Don't make the mistake I made. NEVER SEE THIS MOVIE (unless you're drunk, then it's the funniest thing in the world)!

I rented "Big Wars" because I like dark, mecha-stuffed Anime. I got my share of shadowy skylines and dreary airports, but the movie does not fit the title. One would expect to encounter many many battles, but there is only one small battle. Slow-moving, and with its fair share of subplot, I wouldn't suggest this movie unless you want to study the animation and mood.
