The life of King Louis XV is examined in this movie made for French television. It chronicles the life of a king who ruled France during a great deal of the XVIII century. He was born in Versailles and became a king at the age of five. He came to rule the country by the successive deaths of his own father, and siblings due to the smallpox that killed them. The young monarch had an inquisitive mind. Having received the best education for the times of his formative years, he was supposed to have been betrothed to his first cousin, a Spanish princess, but that union was not meant to be. Instead, Louis married a Polish noblewoman, the daughter of the deposed King Stanislaw. Even though they had a somewhat long married that produced ten children, Louis had a taste for the women around him in the court of Versailles. Notably were Madame Pompadour, and his last mistress, Madame Du Barry. This interesting film, documentary style, directed by Thierry Binisti, was shown on cable. The adaptation of the historical material is credited to Phil Craig, Philippe Dubuisson, and Michel Fessler. The lavish production is a joy to watch due to the cinematography of Dominique De Wever, who makes the best of the natural setting in which the film is set. Versailles is seen in all its splendor. The costumes are excellent, something that enhances the production.Stanley Weber is the adult Louis. He gives an interesting performance making us believe he is none other than King Louis XV. The large supporting cast, too many to single anyone out, contribute to the success of the film.Highly recommended for history fans. It will not disappoint.
