Reviews
Instead, you get a movie that's enjoyable enough, but leaves you feeling like it could have been much, much more.
The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.
At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.
.Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
After the dreadful "H3 Halloween" horror spoof from the same producers I had low expectations for "Spiel mir das Lied und Du bist tot", but it turned out to be much better. The typical Leone western style from the Dollar trilogy and "Once Upon A Time In the West" was imitated pretty well from the technical point of view, using the brownish colors, close-ups of ugly bearded faces and Morricone music. Even if some jokes were dumb (global warming?!) or too repetitive ("you've insulted yourself, Ma"), the story was good enough to keep me watching 90 minutes (subtract 20+ minutes for TV ad breaks to get the actual running time). In a nutshell, it's about 2 brothers, their father and grandpa who try to cheat the rest of the family, quite unlike Bonanza. Ma usually calls their sons "sons of a bitch" and who are they to argue. The sheriff wears white and has shiny white teeth, takes "cleaning up this town" literally and gives all the rogues a hard time. Well, it's not "Nobody" or "Trinita" and it doesn't have Terence Hill, but "Spiel mir das Lied und Du bist tot" is not the worst way to spend some time in between dead serious westerns.
