Reviews
hyped garbage
Good concept, poorly executed.
Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.
While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
This show is almost historical to me. I remember coming home from work one late summer day in 1999. I had dinner, went into the living room and sat down in front of the big-screen TV. The channel happened to be on HBO but I wasn't particularly interested in watching, I mainly wanted to nap. There was a guy on TV dressed kind of unusual doing a stand-up comedy routine. I had no idea who or what it was, but the guy did seem kind of cool. As a lark I turned up the sound and watched a little. At this point I completely forgot about my nap. I started laughing. He was hilarious. Then came a skit that made me laugh so hard that I found it hard to catch my breath. Then the humor came like rapid fire, one after the other, each more unbelievably hilarious than the previous. I was laughing so uncontrollably that I started to feel pain in my lungs and started to choke, I felt like I was going to hurl! Get this; I actually had to make the reluctant decision to turn off the TV because I was afraid I was going to suffocate! I couldn't breathe, my chest was throbbing in pain; and I'm in very good shape! I couldn't help thinking that this was the Monty Python death joke in real life! I'm actually hard to make laugh, but this guy is a phenomenon, a secret weapon, arguably the greatest comedian of all time (not to mention very intelligent and educated). After recovering I immediately looked up the next HBO airing of that show, and set up my VCR to record it. I'd never heard of Eddie Izzard prior to that day, but I immediately became a permanent and devoted fan!
Note: there is no running time on the IMDb page and although logged in, the correction page won't permit me to add one.Note that the DVD box incorrectly labels this as 2 hours and 55 minutes. The correct time is 1 hour and 55 minutes. This is one of Eddie's best shows - hilarious and engaging, funny and warm.Eddie is as lovable as he is outrageous. His humor is gentle and satirical in the best traditions of Monty Python. As only the British can do, he pokes gentle fun at our US ways, thoughts, beliefs and assumptions. The humor is in the realization that he is correct and we are dummies for not realizing the obvious. I own this on DVD, plus two others: GLORIOUS and DEFINITE ARTICLE. Do give him a try if you love British humor.
This is definatley one of the best stand-up shows evre. EVER. Eddie is so off the wall that I've been watching this damn show for nearly five years now, and it still rocks every single time. Just everything from his big broad physical comedy down to the little off the top of the head side remarks, it's a masterpeice. You need look no further than this line "The word herb. You say erb, and we say herb, cuz ther's a f###ing h in it". Brilliant.
This show, originally shown on HBO, showcases the masterful, brilliant, wandering mind of actor/comedian Eddie Izzard. Not so much standup as a hilarious one man performance piece, Izzard roams through history (European and American), transvestitism (his own), film, and even the literary value of Scooby Doo. Classic pieces include the "cake or death" version of the creation of the Church of England and Gunther Heimlich's invention of his very own maneuver! All Izzard's videos beg for repeated viewings, but Dress to Kill is the cream of the crop. Don't miss it!
