Good , But It Is Overrated By Some
Fresh and Exciting
Entertaining from beginning to end, it maintains the spirit of the franchise while establishing it's own seal with a fun cast
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
'Fashion' is one such much movie which was out of the box, i still remember, i was in 10th standard when this movie came out. During that time i was hooked to its songs especially 'Kuch khaas' sung by neha bhasin and 'Mar Jaawa' by shruti pathak, which was quite hummable. I like the way director Madhur Bhandarkar weaved the story about aspiring models from small towns come all the way to achieve big in the glamour capital of India Mumbai. It even showed about the ruthlessness of the businessmen who manipulates these youngsters and hurt their emotions which is damaging. I especially liked the scene where Kangana motivates Priyanka Chopra to shut the mouth of the biggies who insulted her and never feel too guilty about oneself. The narration by Priyanka Chopra throughout the movie explaining about her life in the fashion industry was tight and captivating. Kudos to the star cast and the cameos in it.
Madhur Bhandarkar's effort at making movies about different, unexplored subjects is worthy of appreciation. A story about a model who struggles, rises to fame, becomes arrogant, sees the ugly side of the industry, makes mistakes, falls down the fame spiral and rises back up is a great idea. But the part where this movie disappointed was in it's execution. The lead character (Priyanka) comes across as foolish, arrogant, selfish and immature. Example: There is no reason why she argues with the designer who decides to make her the show-stopper. She gets into an affair with a married man with two children and what I really couldn't understand was what she expected from him. Love? She must've known it's not present even before she gets pregnant, yet begrudges him when he doesn't accept responsibility for the child. How she becomes easily arrogant and insults everyone, badmouths a fellow model and the way they react is all totally unconvincing. He decided to portray a gay couple which is great, but the way they one of them decides to get married for convincing his mother and the henceforth we always see always him with his 'wife'. Besides, if the industry is so cruel, how do her friends react so forgiving to her even when she spoils one of their shows. Then in the end she goes to a bar, gets drunk, and the next thing she sees, she's lying near an 'African' guy. It is highly offensive how she reacts to this and the way it was placed in the movie. Yet, one factor saving this movie from becoming worse, apart from the subject is the marvelous acting, especially from Kangana and from Priyanka. I had high hopes from the idea of the film, but it didn't quite live up to it.
I like Priyanka Chopra and i consider her as my elder sister.I like her but I hate this movie.I don't like any movie that shows my Didiji taking intoxicants.I was very angry to see Priyankadidiji taking intoxicants in this movie.I have tweeted her saying that she should cancel any film offer which tells her to take intoxicants for a character in any film. This is a worthless movie and this should be banned as it shows my Didiji taking intoxicants.I am against intoxicants totally.I am against alcohol, tobacco and narcotics.I always tweet Priyankadidiji not to take intoxicants both in films and real life. She does not listen to me.I am fed up with her.But I am hopeful that one day she will not take intoxicants in films and in real life.
With 'Fashion' Bhandarkar, quite obviously, takes us to the world of fashion. The storytelling falls on the same line as his previous films like 'Corporate', 'Page 3' and 'Chandni Bar'. In a way this is a strength and weakness. The good thing about it is that it shows a darker side of the fashion industry, though Bhandarkar does not go as extreme like he did in 'Page 3'. The problem with his portrayal is that there is no good side. The fashion industry is portrayed as hell. Clearly it couldn't be that bad for every model. I'm not saying that Bhandarkar needs to balance both the good and the bad in his film (as his focus is on the negative) but a glimpse of the positive would have been interesting. Bhandarkar's own 'Satta' is an example (and I believe it is his best film to date). What is it that attracts people about becoming a part of the fashion industry? Is it just the glitter and glamour? What is it that attracts Meghna to become a supermodel? These are things I would have liked to see in the film but Bhandarkar pretty much follows the 'small-town girl enters hell' routine. This was also the same problem with 'Page 3' (where all the rich and wealthy are portrayed as bad), 'Corporate' (ditto) and 'Chandni Bar' (society is bad). What Bhandarkar does is simply throw the negative in the audience's face and let the 'heroine' suffer. Moreover, Bhandarkar infuses some deja-vu and clichéd plots such as Meghna getting pregnant (a la Tara Sharma in 'Page 3'). The homosexual characters are stereotypically portrayed (with the exception of Samir Soni's character). Perhaps a more satirical approach could have made this a better film. Where editing is concerned, there are too many walk-on-the ramp scenes. Alright so it's a movie about fashion so that is expected but overdoing commercial isn't necessary (though it is not as bad as 'The Devil Wears Prada') Yet, 'Fashion' isn't all that bad. It does make one aware of the kind of darkness that taints the industry. The storytelling is compelling in parts as I liked the idea of showing the rise of one model leading to another's fall from grace. The performances are good. It's been a long while since Priyanka Chopra's been in a role of substance and she does a good job of carrying the film. Mughda Godse makes a confident debut and definitely does a fine job. Kangana Ranaut is a little too loud and is clearly getting typecast as the damsel in distress. Samir Soni too does a fine job and Ashwin Mushran performs adequate as Meghna's supporter. Kitu Gidwani and Arjan Bajwa make their presence felt and Arbaaz Khan is sufficient.Overall, 'Fashion' is certainly no bad watch. I like that Bhandarkar attempts different kinds of films and the risky subject matters that scare away other filmmakers. There may be a little pretension and one-sidedness but in the end it's the story of an individual trying to make it and then losing herself in an albeit exaggerated biased ruthless bad world.
