Fanciful, disturbing, and wildly original, it announces the arrival of a fresh, bold voice in American cinema.

Finally, got to see 'Jhoom Barabar Jhoom' after hearing mixed opinions of people. Anurag Kashyap has been credited as the writer but he claimed that he had an idea about a guy and girl meeting at the train station and they tell their stories but then 'someone else' tampered with the script and made changes. That said, I quite enjoyed most of the first half where Riki and Alvira tell their stories at the train station. It is the second half, once they leave the station, which is a downright disaster. The less said about it, the better. 'Jhoom Barabar Jhoom' starts, intervals, the interval of the post interval (that is an interval that takes place when you've finished watching three thirds of the movie) and ends with Amitabh Bachchan's 'item number' (which is the title song itself). Bachchan is dressed as a flamboyant busker who looks like he's ready to lure children and kidnap them. Back to the song, it's a catchy energetic number. There are two other versions of this song all of which work well. 'Kiss of Love' and 'Bolna Halke Halke' are also foot-tapping songs that have been brilliantly visualized. The costumes are a little too flashy (especially the horrible ones worn in the dance competition sequence, yes, surprise surprise, there's a dance competition). Where acting is concerned, Lara Dutta stands out as the French hotel manager slash British-Pakistani harlot. The character Alvira is nothing new for Preity Zinta and she does a fair job but frankly I'm a little tired of watching her repeatedly do this kind of role. Abhishek Bachchan is irritating to the core. I wonder why a sophisticated woman like Alvira would even like a sleazy toilet brush like Riki, let alone fall in love. Bachchan ought to fire his makeup artist-hairstylist or whatever for making him look like a sleazy turd of a pimp. Bobby Deol is dull. Shaad Ali has probably hit rock bottom (careerwise) with this movie (or at least I hope so because I don't want to see any worse than this). I would like to say this to whoever the writer is, whether it was Kashyap or some script-tamperer: Way to go for ruining what could have been at least good entertainment.

Yash Raj has not had much luck at the box office of late, in 2007 they produced 4 movies and only one became a huge sensation and that was Chak De India and the three other that bombed were Tara Rum Pum, Laaga Chunari mein daag and Aaja Nacle. In my personal opinion I think that the box office was rather unfair to Aaja Nacle and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. It's one of those movies that I didn't expect to enjoy but my parents were watching so I watched it with them and was pleasantly surprised. JBJ may not be a masterpiece by any means but from an entertainment point of view it is pretty good. Not every movie is made to become a masterpiece, some movies are just made to provide entertainment which JBJ provides. The story was good but what really saves the movie is the wonderful songs, my favourite being the title track. The director Shaad Ali made full use of the Abhishek Bachan-Bobby Deol pairing, the part where they are both in the motorcycle and the tune to yeh dosti playing in the background(Amitabh Bachan and Dharmendra were both in Sholay)is a very good touch. In my opinion JBJ deserved a better fate at the box office, certainly a better fate than the over-hyped and disappointing Dhoom 2 which was a mega blockbuster but I disliked intensely. JBJ provides decent timepass entertainment and is certainly a lot better than most of the movie produced nowadays.

The movie is blunder from the word "go". I waited.... and waited... and waited for the story to gain momentum but each passing minute was a rolling stone. The glitz and glitter is all around there in the movie including London.... but who wants to see that? It is evident that Shaad Ali got the lavish budget owing to Saathiya and BnB. To play the devil's advocate, the credit for the success of Saathiya should go to Mani Rathnam and A R Rahman. As for BnB, there are a lot of unexplained mysteries in life.YRF is losing credibility big time and should realise that their standard formula is no longer appealing and the mantra of heavy publicity is backfiring. They should learn a lesson or two from PNC who risk to being different and place emphasis on the script/ content. And finally, please keep a tab on the production. Past performance doesn't really guarantee the future benefits – I would really be surprised if Shaad Ali gets another chance from YRF.The only saving grace of the movie is the music especially the title track. Gulzar's lyrics as usual mystical.
