One of my all time favorites.
Great Film overall
It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny
Actress is magnificent and exudes a hypnotic screen presence in this affecting drama.
This documentary really only scratches the surface of the iceberg that is the Mormon Church. Its main purpose is to show a collection of members of the church and how they're good, normal people. The film's purpose seems to be that of showing its audience, "See? Mormons are just normal, average Christians." In that purpose, the film succeeds. The movie steers clear of most of the Church's doctrine, its historical controversy, and such. Probably important to most people, it doesn't depict the most typical Mormon family: white, nuclear family that was born in the church and raised the family in the church. It does a fair job in exploring some Mormons, how their religion affects how they view others or they view their Christian duty. There are some very tender and profound moments. It's on Youtube on the Mormon Channel, so if you're curious, give it a watch.
Like every religion that would attempt to make a documentary film such as this (although I doubt many have the funds available to produce a film like this) they fill the screen with inspirational story after inspirational story. Watching a documentary with such a one-sided approach is not only eye-rollingly cheesy and insulting, but is probably only attended by few other than members of their church (and I see they showed up to provide reviews (hint: check out the meta score to factor out the Mormon influence on IMDBs ratings)). What's insulting is their claim to all that is good and charitable. But, who expects a fair and balanced view of anything that was completely produced and controlled by that entity. As a matter of fact, this movie is exactly what is expected. Very obvious to anyone not a member. The one indication that they were attempting to trick the watcher into believing they wee presenting a fair view of their church was spending the first 5 minutes demonstrating how ignorant non-Mormon Americans are about their church. Of course this segment is filled with the most ridiculous responses to their questions. I would bet that non-Mormons are no more ignorant of the Mormon church than Mormons are of other religions (not covered at all in the film). This movie is as informative as a Walmart commercial is about Walmart (For all you appearing in he first 5 minutes: not very).
Loved the movie. Not preachy. Not too long. The movie quality was awesome. I love how it starts out. The thought came across my mind that it would be well worth watching any movie put out in a simple non preachy, open minded, simply informative about any religion. It would need to be made by the same religion who the movie is about though. To me anyway it's just not official when a foreign group tries to explain a religion as if they are the best to represent that religion. Most religions have so much good to give to the world and I would love to learn about it without feeling pressure which is exactly what this movie does for me.
I loved everything about this movie. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are Christians and aim to live in such a way that emulates Jesus Christ. This movie highlights those qualities found in the lives of those who are Mormons in a profound and moving way. I loved how the six different individuals were extremely diverse and came from all parts of the world. However, they each shared something in common---a deep testimony and love for Jesus Christ and His restored church. I am grateful for their testimonies and for how this movie made me want to be a better person. It also made me extremely thankful and proud to be member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
