The Long Green Line

Coach Joe Newton has used the sport of Cross Country Running to teach simple but important lessons to high school boys for the last 50 years. "Always do your best", "be on time" and "it's nice to be great but far greater to be nice" are mantras, which have turned the Boys Cross Country team at the public York High School in Elmhurst Illinois into the most winning high school team in any sport in America. Along with mastery of their sport, Newton turns boys into men, who carry his teaching and his love for each of them throughout their lives. The Long Green Line documents the York Duke's 2005 Cross Country season as the runners seek their record 25th state title in 50 years.

If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.

All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

Anyone who has ever run cross country in Illinois knows about the legacy of the York "Dorks", or should I say Deacons? My dad ran against them 35 years ago, and I ran against them 5 years ago. They consistently have a great program led by one of the best coaches. After tragedy strikes the team, will they be able to make it back as the front-runners of the Illinois High School Cross Country Scene? This movie dives into what cross country really is, a team sport. It shows the importance of chemistry, as well as having some decent shots of cross country races. Hard work and training pay off, as well as team chemistry being the glue that holds everything together. This film will stick with you. Really cool to see a documentary about a sport that I love
