FEMA City

In 2004, a trailer park was set-up in a field in Charlotte County, Florida after Hurricane Charley destroyed buildings and homes. Nearly 1,500 people moved into the more than 1,000 trailers and it took on the nickname FEMA City. It is FEMA's policy to provide free emergency housing for up to 18 months. Once displaced, residents of FEMA City found that returning to their homes and to normalcy would prove to be one of the greatest challenges of their lives. Filmmaker Jamin Griffiths takes a look at the terrible toll the storm took on the community, and the long, difficult wait of most FEMA City residents to find a foothold back in the Southwest Florida area.

This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.

This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

First up, let me begin by saying that I have never fully trusted news broadcasts, not even if it originates from my nation's own news broadcasts. So it is normal for me not to rely on an unbiased news which come from CNN, CNBC, Al-Jazeera, etc. I believe that these news broadcast were never free and unbiased, and that the news were somehow inclined to suit the powers-that-be, to echo what the powers-that-be wants to hear, and not telling it as what it is.Not that I didn't believe anything being said, but I like to hear the news from different sources, and to decide for myself which provides an accurate explanation to the issue at hand. So, this film provides me an insight on understanding the FEMA city issue better, and not to rely on the information given by the news broadcasts alone. It helps me to understand better the issue, especially since it's been given the hush-hush in the news broadcasts in my country. In no way am I saying that this film provides the most accurate insights regarding the issue, but watching the film, together with the information given in the news, I do understand the issue better. This film gets a 10 for its effort in bringing up the issue, for the thorough lists of people interviewed, and for the problems faced for those living in the FEMA city neighborhood.
