Highly Overrated But Still Good

The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.

Rated for its time, it was the Lord of the Rings back then. Its the story of an every man, but poor man who steals to help the less fortunate. He may do what thieves do, but he is not a thief. Furthermore, he is a good sized fellow which in my opinion comes in handy in case you meet opposition during one of your five finger discount outings. He finally gets in touch with his purpose and that is one nice story. An evil plan is introduced and carried out but with less than the expected results. Steve, Kareem in the movie now gets a chance to make things right, but at the cost of personal peril and risk. The stakes are death and the journey is no joke. The music in this should be mainstream as it is beautiful to listen to and lock in the movie scenes deep into your heart. I can hear it now as I share and it is not one of those that you get tired of easily. At one point, he is allowed an Army and they mirror his personality very well. No more to be said but to be watched instead. Not only should this be released immediately on DVD, but a remake should be made. I suspect there are problems within the ownership chain etc. What a tragedy that some meanie out there is holding this all up. With todays technology, this would easily become one of the greats. Sandwich, snacks, popcorn and something tasty to wash it all down with HEAVILY suggested. If you are a woman who is watching, you are definitely the princess Ameena. If you are a guy, then you are the THIEF OF BAGDAD....and proud of it

Steve Reeves stars in this classic without showing his skin, but his charm is still intact.Karim (Steve Reeves) is the thief who princess Amina (Giorgia Moll) is secretly in love with. She falls ill due to the side effect of a love potion. Only the man who can deliver the blue rose can cure her. Now its race to find the rose between Karim and the prince of Osman, but first they must pass through the seven doors. The movie is a classical fantasy. I believe that this was what family entertainment was all about back in the '60s. Looking back, it definitely looks dated, but people have more gentler demeanor and is pleasing to watch. It is less famous than the same movie starring Zabu, and is of lower key. The movie's story is pretty flat, and is not worth the watch unless you're a die hard Steve Reeves fan.

I haven't seen it since the original release, but I remember thinking at the time it was a storybook adventure in the same league as Jason and the Argonauts. I remember the flying horse to have been a major improvement on the one in the Sabu version of this story, using Disney-type animation for the flying scenes instead of a pair of prop wings that just flopped around, and some of the sequences, like the encounter with the Sirens, were memorably terrifying. If it really is as good as I remember, it's a crime it hasn't been given a proper release on DVD, and doesn't appear on TV more often. Reeves was a major movie icon of the 50s, but except for this film, and to a lesser degree, the first Hercules, he was never given the kind of material that would make the best use of his limited, but likable talent.

To most of us B-movie fans, Steve Reeves (1926-2000, Rest In Peace Steve) will always be Hercules. But dubbed or not he takes a fine stab here at playing a sardonic but good hearted Robin Hood type thief stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. When he falls in love with the absent minded king's daughter, who is subject to a nasty potion by a jealous suitor prince, Reeves goes into action and joins a quest to seek out the blue rose that will restore her to health.Atmospheric lighting & sets combined with light hearted, occasionally silly humor make this more accessible to non-B movie fans while entertaining the die hards as well.
