Plot so thin, it passes unnoticed.
Charming and brutal
It's hard to see any effort in the film. There's no comedy to speak of, no real drama and, worst of all.
It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
It is 2018 and how much effort has been made to open the eyes and minds of what America was really like? History in print does not have the impact as history revealed through a dramatic performance. This move is more a documentary.Make America great again! OK...but there were some American ideals that were far from great, they were depraved. Human nature is sinful and this movie reveals this better than most because we see racism from the little old Christian lady that attends church on Sunday, deeply embedded values passed from generation to generation.Shatner's speech at city hall should be played on MSNBC and CNN as they way "some" parts of America was even back in 1962. There are some scary truths displayed in that speech that would make people cringe today, especially the way Shatner expresses himself, similar to a significant politician today! Eerily so...This one movie could do more to weed out those who are hiding and reveal what political correctness buried. Political correctness disguised the human heart attitudes of racism. It gave the illusion that just because one cannot express themselves in public with certain attitudes, that magically racism was gone. I think people would be shocked at how many people believe Shatner's speech given in this movie today! Shocked...
I watched this film a few days ago and I was stunned! Having seen actual news footage when I was 11 or 12 on TV regarding race riots in the South in the early 60s it was actually like seeing them all over again. Having grown up in a little town in New Hampshire the evil shown in the news footage all came back to me after watching this. I am now 67 and regard this movie as an accurate insight into the insane and dark behavior that humans are capable of. I am not an expert on movie production values but I considered the various roles as having been portrayed very well and William Shatner made the perfect demagogue as I have heard some real fanatics and screwballs during my lifetime and Shatner nailed it in the general sense I believe. I liked the camera work throughout and I thought the audio quality was fine, especially for a low budget black and white film from 1962. Some people might think this movie is over the top but it knocked me for a loop as I had seen this film in another form when I was a 12 year old boy on the TV news.
Somehow in searching for new 50's/60's sci-fi/horror movies to collect that I had not seen I stumbled across this title. It has nothing to do with sci-fi or horror, what Roger Corman is known for. I was intrigued, saw the 7.8 IMDb rating and decided it was worth the price of a DVD. Wow!! Am I ever happy to have come across this, which I now consider his best work, not to mention an excellent performance by a very young William Shatner. How Corman and Shatner wound up making the best film I've seen to date on school integration must one of those "there are no coincidences" kind of things. Also interesting to note that Shatner, who would give US TV viewers their first look at an interracial kiss just a very few years after this movie, would give such a good performance as a rabid racist. I grew up in the deep south, in the 50's and 60's. Grew up watching the Klan walk down main street one Saturday a month. This was a very good portrayal of the times!! Of interest also is the very good, but much too short, "making of" extra with Corman who discusses some of the tricks he had to pull off to get this on location movie made without the townsfolk coming after them. WELL worth the money!!!
I had recently seen shame(aka:the intruder, aka;i hate your guts)and must say i believe its one of Roger Cormans best movies ever,it tackles a very controversial subject, integration in the south during the sixties, well Mr.Shatner plays this racist who goes from town to town stirring up trouble, being a real jerk,i would say being a hate monger, that would make Adolf Hitler proud,i always hear stories that Roger Corman lost money on this film,it flopped.and he blamed William Shatner, which explains why he never cast shatner in any more of his films, well Shatner in a few years from this movie would go on to play Capt Kirk on Star Trek,in 1966,shame is however very well made and realistic, too much use of racial slurs but i guess that makes it what it is.the other actors in shame would go on to play in other Corman films like the haunted palace and other films.i am a big fan of Roger Corman films although he had a few bad ones like carnosaur and the sequels.but this one is one of his best films.10 out of 10
