The Snow Goose

Based upon Paul Gallico's delicate novel, Patrick Garland's Golden Globe winning The Snow Goose is a stark and hauntingly beautiful drama set amongst the striking scenery of the Essex salt marshes during the early years of WWII. A bearded Richard Harris leads the modest cast with his sensitive portrayal of tormented soul Philip Rhayader, a lonely misshapen man shunned by society but with a great love of life; Harris isnt overly bitter of his treatment and expresses his compassion through his paintings and love of the waterfowl that surround him. Harris is ably supported by the waiflike Jenny Agutter as Frith, who radiates the requisite amount of youthful innocence and naivety, and won a best supporting actress Emmy Award for her performance.

Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable

Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.

The movie has left an indelible mark on my psyche… it was emotionally moving with a riveting story line, and wonderfully acted with high drama without being undermined by special effects; superb acting by Richard Harris.I would suggest that it is a great movie for every age and it does provide a great insight into the second world war- the time and events. There are some movies that do not date themselves nor are dated through lack of being topical or relevant-this is one such movie.Having watched it when it was first released and finding many years later still having an impact on me, I can't help feel that this movie needs to be promoted and more accessible.

This was my very favorite movie as a young kid. It had something to do with making me a lifelong bird watcher. Awesome movie. It is a beautiful story to share with children. It has a strong message about tenderness, love and appreciation for all God's creation. I have found that there are many of us out there who still remember this film. I hope someday Hallmark can settle the legal issues with the author's estate so they can release this on DVD for future generations to love.Watching Richard Harris in this is a real lesson in acting. Wow, it's one of his best roles I think. And the scenery along the Essex coast is haunting and beautiful. One note: Lots of people are looking for a copy of this, but they are hard to find. I just got a copy of this movie dubbed from an old video tape someone made when it aired on TV. Here is not the place to give you all the details. Go to the message boards under the thread "I have The Snow Goose" for details.

The Snow Goose is one of the most moving films about the relationships between birds and man ever made. The film was made on the Blackwater in Essex, at the sea wall near and around Osea Road,( which leads to Osea Island). My wife's family owned a caravan close to where the film would have been shot since the 1950's, and my wife grew up spending a lot of her childhood in the area that the film so beautifully depicts. We no longer own a caravan there but would love to see the film again. The atmosphere in the film reflects the magic of the Blackwater. The honking geese are still part of the landscape, although the snow goose would be a very rare visitor. All the cast portray the essence of the local people and make them real. Please help us to see this wonderful film again.

I took my small kids to see the 1971 film and we all wept copiously. It was a wonderful movie.I note with trepidation the remake being filmed in LA right now with Billy Connoly and Olivier Martinez. Can OM possibly get anywhere near as good as Richard Harris ? OM is not noted for his ability to convey feelings one can empathise with.I hope I am wrong but most remakes are dreadful, including the Alfie one with Jude Law.Why not just re release this greatest masterpiece.? I had not thought about this movie for years but now recalling it I think it has to be up in my top 10.A gem for anyone between 2-102,even if it is essentially a kids story an somewhat heavily laden with saccharine.I do believe that black and white movies were an excellent vehicle for creating "moods".I miss the B/W movies. And dread my memory of this masterpiece taking a hit on the remake.
