The Marsh
Two social outcasts in 19th century Eastern Europe, Alexandre and Ulysse, become friends and settle down to live alone on the edge of a marsh that is reputedly haunted by demons, monsters and goblins. These two men have been outcasts all their lives. Alexandre was raised in a nomad family that traveled from town to town, being rejected by the people of his homeland. Due to his physical abnormalities, Ulysse has always been pushed aside ever since his childhood. When a strange murder is committed in a nearby village, the peasants turn their suspicions on Alexandre and Ulysse, because they are different. In the eyes of the villagers, they are demons that must be hunted, burned and killed.

It's not great by any means, but it's a pretty good movie that didn't leave me filled with regret for investing time in it.
There are better movies of two hours length. I loved the actress'performance.
It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
The best films of this genre always show a path and provide a takeaway for being a better person.
Kim Nguyen's Le Marais is a great tale of the good and the evil. Add to that a touch of magic and fantasy and you've got an entertaining film by this newcomer. The story somehow reminded me of the great Of Mice and Men. The photography is nice and it's interesting to see what can still be done with a limited budget. And the performances of the lead actors are good. There's a certain sense of mystery that add to the film. Good to watch.Out of 100, I gave it 78. That's good for **½ out of ****.Seen in Toronto, during Cinéfranco, at the Famous Players Canada Square Cinemas, on March 30th, 2003.
The visuals of this film alone are amazing. The story is full of emotion relying more on body language and actions than words to portray the characters. Dreamy, sad, magical. Very good acting especially by Paul Ahmarani.
"Le Marais" is truly an impressive work of art for a first-timer film-maker like Kim Nguyen, and it would be impressive from just any experienced director. It is a very emotional fantastic/philosophical tale, exploring the notion of the scapegoat. The story is very well written, the actors are good and the images are breathtaking. The new techniques Kim Nguyen used for the optimization of the colors are revolutionary.A must-see (if you're open minded and willing to see something different for a change)!
The result is impressive for a small budget movie. This movie is not for every one. You must be open minded. I did like the movie because you have to think and watch closely to understand what is happening. The colors are well use. Actors are good. The story is great. Some set seem cheap (low budget). In conclusion: I had a great time watching this movie. I can't wait to see what Kim Nguyen will do next.
