Funny, strange, confrontational and subversive, this is one of the most interesting experiences you'll have at the cinema this year.
The acting is good, and the firecracker script has some excellent ideas.
The tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.
The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
Wild Zero is not a movie. It is an experience, an in your face, melt your brain piece of pure crazy. The kind that makes my wife say, "Do we really own this?"Yes. We do. I'm going to buy it again just to have it twice.Ace is our hero, Guitar Wolf's biggest fan. After he saves the band from a tense standoff with The Captain, an evil music executive, he becomes blood brothers with Guitar Wolf himself (the other members are Bass Wolf and Drum Wolf) and receives a signal whistle for whenever he is in trouble.Guitar Wolf is so great that flames come out of their mic stands and they blast the crowd with lightning when they play. They sound like fuzz and noise and menace. They are everything perfect about rock and roll.On his journey to the next Guitar Wolf show, Ace meets Tobio, a Thai stranger on the run. He saves her from a robbery then leaves, but on the road he encounters zombies. Realizing that he's in love — and inspired by the spirit of Guitar Wolf — he goes back to save her.The Captain comes back to fight Guitar Wolf with a grenade launcher (which Guitar Wolf shrugs off, only pausing to tune his guitar). There are zombie fights galore. Many, many heads explode. A naked military girl kills zombies from her shower. Oh yeah — and Ace finds out that Tobio is really a guy, a fact that this movie celebrates. Yes — instead of making jokes, the spirit of Guitar Wolf tells Ace that "Love has no borders, nationalities or genders! DO IT!" Keep in mind this movie was made nearly twenty years ago, so this is pretty amazing.Read more at https://bandsaboutmovies.com/2017/10/13/wild-zero-1999/
I love zombie films, I love weird Japanese cinema, and as Joan Jett used to sing, I love rock 'n' roll. So why don't I love Wild Zero, a weird Japanese rock 'n' roll zombie film?On paper, it certainly sounds like a dream come true for fans of outrageous horror: the unique plot sees garage rock band Guitar Wolf fighting a plague of zombies, an alien invasion, and a be-wigged, hot-pants wearing club manager with a grudge against the band, and during the course of the film, viewers are treated to such extraordinary sights as a deadly plectrum attack, a gun-toting babe in sexy Burberry outfit, a bad guy who can shoot electricity from his eyes, zombie love, and a rather unorthodox affair between Guitar Wolf's biggest fan and a she-male called Tobio!!In reality, however, Wild Zero is a lot less memorable than it sounds: the unusual elements do not gel particularly well, and the result is a disjointed film that is definitely less than the sum of its parts. It is further handicapped by some pretty iffy digital effects (including several very crap CGI head explosions) and some of the most laughable zombie make-up in film history. In fact, the whole affair feels very much like a calculated ploy to attract a cult following, and I suspect that many of those who sing its praises feel obliged to do so, lest they should be deemed 'uncool'. Personally, I prefer my cult films to have a less manufactured vibe.Still, it's not ALL bad news, I suppose: the film has loads of energy, the soundtrack is pretty good, and Burberry babe flashes her norks.3.5 out of 10, generously rounded up to 4 for IMDb.
As someone who's been listening to Guitar Wolf since the early 90s and seen them live a dozen times, I near about wet myself when I first saw this many years ago. Having seen them appear in Sore Losers was funny enough but a movie centered around zombies, killer GW tracks, and schlocky FX and acting...who could resist! Certainly it's got its B-movie charm and the US DVD has the drinking game, but on some level, garage rockers and rock and rollers get this movie and rightly so. It's so over the top and nuts, and the characters have such great idiosyncrasies you can't help but love 'em. The plot isn't so great but there are some absurdities here that you'd find in some of Miike's endings (a la the end scene in Dead or Alive. WTF!) and it's enough to hold your interest and give you a wild ride. But, it's Japanese cinema so who cares, it's not always supposed to make sense. I guess the GW guys are looking for Wild Zero 2 sponsors so I hope they make a funnier sequel. ACE!
Fantastic debut film fantastic modern trash movie not one for people who take things (in general) to seriously its all a bit of fun! The plot is what you'de expect but it really does not matter in this case its the taking part that counts(i cant believe i said that?!?! but its true). The lead singer of Guitar Wolf (also named guitar wolf) is superbly charismatic and cool even though he can't act for toffee it does not matter!!! The film really reminded me a lot of another Post Punk classic Repoman it has that similar feel to the plot with the aliens and all...hmmmm. Well if if you loved Repoman and you love the Ramones you will ****ing love this ROCK AND ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
