Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.

This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.

It is encouraging that the film ends so strongly.Otherwise, it wouldn't have been a particularly memorable film

Bloodsucking Freaks (1976) ** 1/2 (out of 4)Joel M. Reed's notorious exploitation flick about an off, off Broadway show being hosted by Sardu (Seamus O'Brien), which advertises "torture" but it is in fact real torture. Sardu and his dwarf assistant Ralphus (Luis De Jesus) keeps a group of women chained up with the sole purpose of killing them on stage. Sardu eventually decides to kidnap a ballerina (Natasha Di Natalie) so that he can impress (and kill) a critic who sees him as trash. Soon her football star boyfriend (Niles McMaster) and a crooked detective (Dan Fauci) are trying to find out what's really going on. Also known as THE INCREDIBLE TORTURE SHOW, this film became best known under the BLOODSUCKING FREAKS title and there's no question that it's quite vile, disgusting, sexist, revolting and just about every other negative word you can think of. With that said, there's something so beautifully bizarre and weird with this picture that, if you can stomach it, you can't help but have some dirty fun with it. Yes, technically speaking there's really nothing impressive here and you could bash some of the bad acting and poor effects but why hate? Yes, this is an extremely low-budget movie and we could nitpick it to death but you can't get over the fact that this thing picks up new fans each and every year.I think what makes this film work so well is the simple fact that it's downright bizarre. It almost seems like a group of friends just got together to make a movie and decided to come up with the craziest situations they could think of. There are numerous torture sequences here, which are so over-the-top that you can't help but laugh at them. Unlike many exploitation films, this one here is shockingly not mean- spirited and this here is another reason it works. This actually plays quite well as a black comedy and there's no doubt that you'll be laughing at how silly some of the stuff is. Just take a look at the cannibal women living in the basement. Watch the "doctor" scene and the brain drilling. Just the way this scene plays out is meant to make your stomach sick and you to laugh at how crazy it actually is.The film will always be remembered for how crazy it is and there's no doubt that the violence and gore is so over-the-top that you often can't believe what you're watching. The non-stop nudity is another thing the film is notorious for and when you combine all of this stuff it's easy to see why it earned (and deserved) the X-rating. It should also be noted at how fun the cast is. Seamus O'Brien, who was murdered shortly after the film was released, is simply charming in the lead role and De Jesus is also a blast as the assistant. Fauci is also entertaining in the role of the crooked detective and especially the wonderful way he delivers the lines.BLOODSUCKING FREAKS certainly isn't going to be a movie for everyone. In fact, the overwhelming majority are going to be highly offended and disgusted by it, which is a good thing if you're a fan of exploitation. Any movie that continues to shock nearly forty-years after it was made means that it was done correctly.

Bloodsucking Freaks is one infamous mother of 70's horror / exploitation . Our heroes Sardu and his right hand man, a midget with an afro named Ralphus run The Theater Of The Macabre.(a murder sex bondage magic show) The Theater is really a front for white slavery and a whole lot of bizarre fetishes Sardu and Ralphus indulge in .As far as delivery of sex and violence , Bloodsucking Freaks is an exploitation fan's dream. Expect truckloads of sleaze and depravity. There is nudity and 70's bush galore, as well as cannibalism, necrophillia, S&M, torture , dismemberment, as well as a boatload of bizarre fetishes to make the majority of the audience fill their barf bags. As outrageous as this film is, it is real well acted and a good film.Bloodsucking Freaks is real sick and hilarious piece of camp that holds up well and makes me laugh every time I watch it . Cult classic.

Rating highly as a prime piece of raw'n'revolting 70's grindhouse sleaze, gleefully wallowing in the utmost depths of depravity with a certain jolly mean-spiritedness that's both fiercely funny and genuinely appalling in equal measure, this infamous cult splatter shocker delivers exactly what it promises in its foul tale of merry sadist Master Sardu (marvelously essayed with lip-smacking hammy brio by Seamus O'Brien) and his theatre of the macabre where he presents a "faked" Grand Guignal stage show depicting extreme acts of torture and depravity. Writer/director Joel M. Reed definitely gives the audience their grubby money's worth: brain sucking through a straw, dismemberment, snarling nude cannibal gals locked in a cage, nipple electric shock, a white slaver ring, gay necrophilia, fried eyeballs, grisly teeth extraction with pliers, vicious S&M whippings, a harsh'n'hateful misogynistic streak, oodles of bare female flesh, and one of the most repulsive examples of forced fellatio ever committed to celluloid are all present and accounted for. Moreover, the cast attack the blithely base and tasteless material with unfettered aplomb: Diminutive porn stud Luis De Jesus has a fiendish field day as Sardu's savage dwarf assistant Ralphus, Dan Fauci contributes an amusing turn as meddlesome blackmailing Sergeant John Tucci, Alan Dellay makes for a perfectly obnoxious jerk as uptight snob critic Creasy Silo, and lovely blonde Viju Krem is suitably sweet and fragile as fetching abducted ballerina Natasha D'Natalie. The authentically grubby New York City locations, Ron Dorfman's basic cinematography, a hilariously cruel sense of spot-on pitch-black gallows humor (this fine fetid flick is essentially a remarkably dark satire on the seamy underbelly of show business), and Michael Small's alternately jaunty and shivery synthesizer score further enhance this gloriously ghastly atrocity's considerable uniquely gross and repugnant charm. Absolutely essential viewing for sick cinema buffs.

First of all, if you can't see at least a little humor in a dismal B-Horror flick which includes home-style brain surgery, unnecessary amounts of torture, and eyeball soup being prepared by an overly-enthusiastic midget named Ralphus, then now would be the time to stop reading, and to go check out something a little tamer like California Axe Massacre. Anyone who is familiar with the Troma catalog knows that Blood Sucking Freaks is by far, the most vile, most disgusting, most evil, and the most flat-out repulsive thing those guys have to offer. A film that shows us exactly how rotten this world we live in can be. Oh, and did I mention how hilarious this movie is?Of course it was filmed New York City, where else could something this hateful, and mean-spirited possibly take place? Our story is about a New Yorker named Sardu. Sardu is the most sadistic, power-hungry individual you will ever come across. This guy runs his "Theater of the Macabre", where he and his eager assistant, Ralphus torture naked women in front of audiences, except the unsuspecting (and extremely gullible) audience thinks the torture isn't real, and that it's all just a show, and that all these women won't be slaughtered or sold. But the unfortunate truth is, yes, these women will most certainly be slaughtered or sold... but more than likely slaughtered, possibly as an example to those who disobey Sardu, or for Ralphus's amusement. These guys ain't no amateurs, Sardu and Ralphus realize women can be used for more than just torture. There's also tables, dart-boards, toilet's, mindless slaves, well, you get the idea. Clever, eh? No!!? Well, maybe not, but Blood Sucking Freaks is what it is. True Horror for the true Horror fan only. Anyone else just wouldn't understand. Some people seem to think that Blood Sucking Freaks is a bit uncalled for. Something about promoting, and possibly even making light of cruelty towards women. I'd love nothing more than to come up with some ironic argument, disproving this theory, but I strongly suspect there isn't one. Sardu and Ralphus ain't nice to the ladies, and that's just the way it is. In a strange way, Blood Sucking Freaks was ahead of it's time. You just didn't see such harsh Horror mixed with humor. Humor or no humor, this film should make just about anybody feel the need to take a shower, to try in vain to rid yourself of some of that filth and grime. The DVD includes commentary by Eli (Hostel) Roth. I suppose good 'ol Eli considers his work in the same league as this pitch-black nightmare. Well, Mr. Roth...No... just no. That's basically it. As I was listening to Mr. Roth's commentary, I couldn't help notice how deeply this guy was reading into every little thing that occurred. I'm going to just go ahead and assume he was pulling our legs. If not, then this guy knows waaaay too much about Blood Sucking Freaks, which I can understand, I mean, this is a really good movie. For more in insane midgets who fancy torture, or similar tomfoolery, The Sinful Dwarf is a must-see. As for torture, if you seriously want something more extreme than this, then you might be barking up the wrong tree, as snuff films might be what you're looking for, because Blood Sucking Freaks is about as extreme as a B-cinema gets. Total cruelty, pure sadism, 100% Horror, and 0% taste. Yay for Blood Sucking Freaks. 10/10
