The Hospital

Old St. Leopold's Hospital has many urban legends surrounding it, but the residents of Bridgeport all agree on one thing: tortured souls roam its abandoned halls. The mystery proves too much for a pretty young student who decides to investigate for her senior class project. Unfortunately, she does not find ghosts. She, instead, finds Stanley... serial rapist, murderer, and psychopath. As the young girl becomes Stanley's new pet, a team of young investigators descend on the hospital to "hunt some ghosts." Stanley sees nothing but fun and games in his future. But, what Stanley does not know is that the hospital truly is haunted and the restless spirits there are not happy with what he has been doing.

In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.

Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.

Yes folks, this is a low budget independent horror. There are no anorexic Hollywood actors, no fancy CGI effects. And it is extreme horror, this isn't PG-13 stuff for teens. Some girls drive around when their car breaks down. Someone else arrives. Next thing we know, they are tortured and raped. And that's just the intro. A college girl travels to a town to investigate the rumors surrounding the local abandoned hospital. Everyone in town encourages her to leave and forget about it. She doesn't. You can guess what happens to her. Except that she isn't killed but kept alive by the bad guy.5 girls take a paranormal investigation tour sponsored by some sleazy paranormal investigator. He hands the girls over to 2 guys who'll do the tour. The tour will be several days at the hospital, where the groundskeeper is...the bad guy from the intros.Turns out the 2 guys aren't just interested in hooking up with the girls but they have much more sinister plans for them. And it gets very nasty, let's put it that way. Eventually cops get involved as well as the father of the college girl and her sister. But there are some more twists to the story. As a low budget movie, you should know to expect uneven acting, poor lighting, problems with sound, normal looking people, etc. But what I didn't expect was how extreme and graphic this movie would be. There lots of violence, gore, nudity, blood, and other bodily fluids. But they actually bothered to come up with a good story and script. Acting isn't all around terrible, several actors here do a good job. I'm going to give The Hospital high marks for the sheer guts to make a movie like this and for the cast for being committed to doing some pretty nasty stuff. You can't really review and rate a movie like this by Hollywood standards. Overall, a courageous attempt and if you know what you're getting yourself into, it's even enjoyable.

The concept of the movie is good. The execution is very weak. With the right people behind this movie and a decent budget this movie could have been much better. Change the actors as well. Such terrible acting, I think my 4 year old is a better actor than most of them combined.Once again, good storyline, although, a few too many boobs and rape scenes.Don't get fooled by the cover of the DVD.. I believe those are fake reviews as well here on IMDb. 5 of the reviews get a perfect 10, which is according to any standards impossible for this movie.Hopefully the makers learn from their mistakes and next project will be better.

But in the best of ways. I tried my best to avoid spoilers on this film as much as possible before viewing, because all I knew ahead of time was that it was full of plot twists. I also knew going into this, it was going to be disturbing to watch. It didn't disappoint. This is a film in the category of "We don't give a f**k how you feel, you're gonna watch this and you're gonna be sickened."From a critical standpoint, I have to point out that most of the acting is sub-par, but some shining stars in this film are Daniel Emery Taylor, Jim O'Rear, Jason Crowe, and Alicia Clark. The kills are nauseating, and some of them actually hilarious. Some of the production value seems to be cheesy as well, but what can you expect from a soon to be cult classic B-movie?From an artistic standpoint, I have to give this film a thumbs up. If someone can make a film like Hostel, then why can't they make a film like The Hospital? All in all, if you want to get some of your friends together and have an unusual viewing experience, do yourself a favor and check this one out. You won't walk away from this feeling the same ever again.

Let's start with a word of warning -- or encouragement, depending on your tastes. "The Hospital" is a sick little puppy of a movie. The plot is deceptively familiar -- a student reporter goes to a small town to research a "haunted hospital." The locals warn her to stay away, but she ignores their warnings and goes the the hospital where she is promptly captured by the caretaker, a grotesquely fat creep named Stanley. Meanwhile, a group of twenty-somethings get together to investigate the hospital for one of those "Ghost Investigation" television shows. Once they get to the hospital, they run into Stanley and, of course, end up getting more than they bargained for. But the film lulls you into a false sense of security, because when the crap starts to hit the fan (and hit it, it most certainly does), it does so in a way that is unexpected and jolting. "The Hospital" doesn't scrimp on nudity, violence, and overall sickness and that is a point in its favor. The acting is, as is typical for a low-budget indie, of varying quality but in general it's pretty good -- the victims, in particular, give very brave and believable performances that give the film some real power. Most of the actresses (with one exception) are attractive and the actors don't look like just they were just a group of the director's friends. There are certainly flaws -- the film meanders at times, there are some attempts at comedy that fall flat, and the filmmakers seriously overreach for some special effects (especially in the climax) that just don't cut it and, to be honest, look a little silly. One specific warning is that in addition to the violence the film has some pretty strong rape sequences. But in a way that actually adds to the realism of the film since that's what you'd expect a real sicko to do. Adding to the realism is that the original student reporter is a very heavy woman -- almost as heavy as Stanley the caretaker -- and in real life these type of women get captured as well as slender and fit gals. (As an aside, they probably should have rewritten some of script once this actress was cast, since the characters continually refer to her as "She's so pretty!" and "She was the prom queen!" which, despite the brave performance of the actress, is not how anybody would describe her.)"The Hospital" is not for everyone, obviously, but if you are a fan of sick indie horror and want to spend some time with your mouth agape stunned at what you're seeing unfold on the screen before you, then "The Hospital" is definitely worth checking out.
