This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.

The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.

DOOM ASYLUM is a surprisingly graphic little independent horror film from the 1980s. The plot is predictable stuff but the execution is better than expected for the era, and this has more real horror in it than something contemporaneous like MEMORIAL VALLEY MASSACRE. The main character is an unlucky chap who's involved in a car accident at the outset and then gets skinned by a blundering pathologist during his autopsy. The only problem? He's still alive! The story then fades away as the setting moves to a real-life abandoned asylum. The killer bumps off a random bunch of annoying characters one by one but the real surprise is just how gory the deaths in this film are. The gore is achieved via prosthetic effects and make up and all of it is remarkably complex and original with some truly bizarre and sadistic ends for these annoying folk. The bloodshed is comparable to something like Scott Spiegel's INTRUDER and makes the film worth watching, more than compensating for the deficiencies in script, budget, and talent. Watch out for SEX AND THE CITY actress Kristin Davis long before she became famous.

I know everyone knows the term, so good it's bad and I dunno why it took me so long to get round to seeing this little gem. Don't get me wrong but this isn't a masterpiece by any means, in fact it's totally the opposite, it's incredibly terrible. But there's something about it that's also highly enjoyable and just pure fun.It opens with a young couple speeding down a countryside road, after the lawyer wins a 5 million court case, but after getting too caught up in their selves, the car crashes, leaving the girl dead and the man half dead. When he wakes up half of his face has been cut to shreds and he loses it and kills the doctors. Then 10 years later, he's hiding out in an old abandoned asylum where a group of teens and a trio of female rock band decide to party there, which angers the lawyer as he starts to pick them off one by one.The horror stuff here is pretty standard, having the usual stalk and slash when members of the group go off on their own. The deaths are pretty good, even if the effects aren't up to standard, but there is a pretty decent body count. The movie never gets boring as it moves along at a rather quick pace and I also liked the way they injected humour into the plot, but what I didn't like were the scenes of the killer watching old black and white movies, as they seem to go on for a bit too long and just seemed unnecessary and pointless. But there is still fun to be had, and there are several hilarious scenes to be had like when one of the rock chicks fights with one the boys, it was hilarious and has to be seen to believe, then others that border beyond stupid, like the daydream scene with Darnell and the other rock chick running towards each other in slow motion, which was funny at first, but maybe used a bit too much, then towards the end when two of the characters are praying in the old church, despite the fact that a killer is on their tale and even the beginning with the car accident when the girl's hand is supposedly cut off, you can clearly see it underneath the grass, all this is just fun pure cheese and adds highly to the camp factor.The cast, even though it was badly acted, but they still had fun with their roles and each and everyone brought something to the table. Firstly the killer (Michael Rogen) really stood out, he wasn't scary or menacing but more of a wisecracking villain, okay some of his dialogue wasn't funny or didn't work, he did make up for it with his inventive kills. The main girl Kiki/Judy played by Patty Mullen who also played the girl at the beginning was just gorgeous, her performance was very uneven, but she was still an interesting addition to the cast. Then there's Tina (Ruth Collins) who was just plain chewing the scenery and her over the top laugh was just hilarious and she really had lots of fun with the role and didn't take it too seriously. Also including another star before they were famous Kristin Davis who never seems to age, she looks the same here as she does now, she plays the sexy bookworm character quite well and has nasty death scene.All in all if you're looking for scares and chills then "Doom Asylum" isn't for you, this is played more for laughs, but it works and has something likable about it.

The title "Doom Asylum" should identify that this is not a movie to take seriously. Indeed, it's all about having fun. Every stereotype of a slasher movie that there is, you'll find here. Of course, the movie's main significance nowadays is that it's the film debut of Kristin Davis, best known as Charlotte on "Sex and the City". So, the main thing that I took from this story of a disfigured man inhabiting an abandoned asylum is that Kristin Davis has a fine pair of legs on her. And that the leader of the punk band shows everyone her breasts. It definitely looks like a movie that they had fun filming. You're sure to love it.House of the rising sun indeed!

Surviving a horrible car accident the survivor settles in an abandoned asylum. Time after the accident, a group of teens sneak into the asylum just to be brutally murdered by the survivor of the mentioned accident. The disfigured and demented man kills his victims using medical instruments in gruesome ways. The lone survivor of these teens (as usual) discovers a terrible secret that has to do with the killer.Awful slasher, poor directed, poorly acted, filled with horrible f/x and makeup. When I picked this trash from the video store I couldn't resist laughing at the cover. I guess I rented it because I wanted to discover what was the deal of the killer. During the movie the killer tries to act like Leatherface, and I say he looks plain stupid. This is not the kind of slasher to watch more than once, it's gory but it isn't entertaining. This slasher's running time is 77 minutes, 15 of the minutes show footage of another unknown crappy movie and commercials the killer watches on his t.v.! You have to watch it to believe it.The asylum is scary, and some of the pretended scares (lamely) worked with such a creepy setting. The lead character is one of the Sex and The City women, so that's the most important fact of this trash.Watch it just once! Surely it won't send shivers up your funny bone, but it will give you something to discuss on a bad horror movies board. 2/10 -After watching it, immediately boot it to the trash can!
