The Virgin Sacrifice
“Before ‘Virgin’, I never put much stock in the idea of a ‘cursed’ production. Take a film like ‘Incubus’. Just cause the director’s nephew died, the production company went belly up, and Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate attended the premiere....Those could all just be coincidences. Shit happens. But with ‘Virgin’, you could just smell the vapor of evil clouding the set. It didn’t help that our chief investor was a ranking member of the Church of Satan. In the end, we tallied three OD’s, a maimed-for-life set designer, bankruptcy, and a car bombing (sort of). Even the film itself disappeared. Not just the prints. The film lab burnt down and we lost the negative. All I’ve got left is the nine minute opening to the main feature and the sound-sync is fucked.” —JXW

Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.
The story-telling is good with flashbacks. The film is both funny and heartbreaking. You smile in a scene and get a soulcrushing revelation in the next.
The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
The biggest problem with this movie is it’s a little better than you think it might be, which somehow makes it worse. As in, it takes itself a bit too seriously, which makes most of the movie feel kind of dull.
The Virgin Sacrifice (1970)**** (out of 4)J.X. Williams wrote and directed this bizarre short about a woman who can't talk who goes to see about an apartment where she meets two woman. One woman says that her job is to work for Satan and soon they go to a basement where we see a sacrifice.I honestly can't believe that I've been into exploitation for so long and had never heard of this film or of its director. That's really too bad because this here is a rather remarkable film that deserves to be much better known. It's an incredibly bizarre little film that works on so many levels but it's clear that Williams had a certain visual style that could only be compared to what most people experience during an acid trip.I say that because this film (as well as PSYCH-BURN) have a lot of bizarre, psychedelic images that have all sorts of weird things going on. We see some naked people dancing around. There's a shot of someone being murdered. There's even an animated sequence with countless skeletons doing weird things. This entire film has a very dark and rather creepy atmosphere and it's something like the films released by Something Weird Video, although this here is so much better than anything I've seen from them. If you're a fan of the bizarre then this here is a must see.
