This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
Clearly somebody is screwing around with the rating here. This is no masterpiece, but it's definitely not a 3 star film. It's a solid, decent coming-of-age drama. I'm curious who is out to tank the rating.
I saw this film accidentally at a film festival in Prague. Later on, I kept using this films as a audiovisual materials in my class. I really like this film. It's simple but very thought-provoking. The audience must have some background knowledge of Taiwan in order to enjoy more of the film. A innocently mischievous idea by the students entails with Taiwanese social phenomena and political ideals from the history. A light comedy carries the heaviness from the history and the society.
