A different way of telling a story
Wow! What a bizarre film! Unfortunately the few funny moments there were were quite overshadowed by it's completely weird and random vibe throughout.
It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
When I'm on the treadmill I always listen to the rousing finale to this...you have Jean Valjeans from 17 countries performing "Do you hear the people sing..." and "One day more" and in their own language. Inspirational and moving.Unfortunately they were missing the Greek, Spanish and Italian Jean Valjeans. How could they miss them? They would have added a continental flavor to the performance. But thankfully they had the Japanese Jean Valjean. The singer later on went to host Top Chef, the original one. It was touching to see Rob Guest as the Australian Jean Valjean. Sadly he died a few years ago.
What can I say that hasn't been said already. This concert performance of Les Miserables is simply superb and one of my personal favourite performances of any musical to date. The story and characters are vivid and the music is magnificent and one of those musicals where there isn't a single bad tune, Stars, Bring Him Home, On My Own and Empty Chairs and Empty Tables always had the most impact on me.The performance is shot excellently, and while not the most visually appealing of all Les Miserables the settings and costuming are appropriate. The orchestral playing and conducting are superb too, and the performances are faultless. Michael Maguire and Judy Kuhn mayn't be completely ideal age-wise but I can forgive that when I hear how well they act and sing.Michael Ball's Empty Chairs and Empty Tables is heart-wrenching, Lea Salonga is a lovely Eponine(though I couldn't help thinking that Kuhn would have been better suited while Salonga sang Cosette, but it doesn't hurt the performance at all) and Alun Armstrong is perfectly cast and very funny. Colm Wilkisnon is an expressive and dynamic Valjean, complete with a very moving rendition of Bring Him Home. Phillip Quast is superb as Javert, conveying his harshness as well as making him a sympathetic figure. Stars is also a contender for the best rendition of the performance, it was very commanding and magnificently sung.Overall, a superb Les Miserables. 10/10 Bethany Cox
This concert version of Les Miserables is literally almost picture perfect. It has a magnificent cast and the music is absolutely enchanting, wonderful and almost magical. It is perhaps the best stage production I have ever had the pleasure of viewing Because it was a tenth anniversary celebration, this concert had the the advantage of having drawn together a diverse range of talent from around the globe. And they all shine to perfection. Of particular note is Ruthie Henshall's haunting performance of Fantine. She really brings the character to life in a way that I have very rarely seen either on stage or on television. She really made me understand and appreciate Fantine's character in a way that I had never been able to do previously -she just gave her so much heart, character and soul. I wish I could find the adequate words to capture the beauty and essence of how powerful and moving she was but I don't think they exist in language That having been said, each member of the cast succeeds in giving their character a depth, dimension and substance that can very rarely be seen either in concert or on stage. Colm Wilkinson plays Jean Valjean so well that I have difficulty believing he is not a real character. Phillip Quast is the perfect Javert. Michael Ball is a great embodiment of Marius while Judy Kuhn plays Cosette so well (and the young girl who portrays the young Cosette is equally as brilliant). The couple who play the Thenardiers are really great comic talent and absolutely hilarious in their role. And I could just go on and on The orchestral music, the costumes and the stage background for this show is second to none. And the last performance -well, I won't spoil it for you -but let's just say it's an absolute treat Please, if you never see another musical in your life, rent the video/DVD of this. I cannot recommend it highly enough
Having been a big fan of les mis before buying this DVD i knew i'd enjoy it but wow! Tis is the most phenomenal recording of the musical there has ever been. You don't need the full stage production, hearing the music performed by a huge orchestra, choir and undoubtedly the best cast there has ever been is breathtaking. You will laugh, cry and lose yourself in this brilliant show. particular attention should be drawn to colm wilkinson who owns the role of Van Jean and philip quast who's voice is so full of meaning and emotion you can't help but become spellbound.watch it! you haven't lived until you've seen it.
