The Warlord: Battle for the Galaxy

The time is the 21st century, after the fall of the Galactic Republic. Technology is at a standstill, families have been dismantled, and those who have survived the destruction now live in a savage age ruled by evil warlords. This story has more twists and turns than a second-rate soap opera.

Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.

The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.

As a movie, it's a bit flat and the plot reads like the summary for a Nintendo game. Her's sister gets kidnapped by the bad guys, and he gathers a ragtag team of adventurers to save them. A retired general, a reformed bad guy, a telepath, a kid (not as annoying as Wesley), and some woman whose purpose is to take up space on the bridge. The movie can't match StarWars for effects, but it's marginally better than Episode 1 and Episode 2.As a TV Pilot (which it is), it's very similar to Andromeda, with a civilization thrown in chaos, and the heroes having to restore civilization to save the galaxy. It's a 70s type space opera with improved effects and better set design. While it had the same potential but the "To Be Continued" type ending can lead you with a bad taste in your mouth if you're not ready for it. I was somewhat saddened to find out that there was no series, so the entire movie was a setup for an ending that will never be made.

Like many potentially great sci-fi flicks THE WARLORD suffers from many problems caused by its starvation budget. Though it was shot for peanuts in 1996 as a t-v pilot on the Paramount back lot -- and looks it-- it nevertheless has a lot to recommend it. It is worth watching if only to see veteran Rod Taylor back in harness and to see yet another brilliant performance by multi-talented teen Elisabeth Harnois. (I can't understand by Hollywood doesn't recognize this youngster's extraordinary talents. She should have been a super star long ago.) The cast does an excellent job with a weak script and Joe Dante's direction is flawless. I found THE WARLORD to be an entertaining two hours, infinitely better than much of the dreck that is passing as excellent cinema in these strange days.

I would like to make clear that it is very hard for a science fiction movie to dissapoint me but this one most certainly does. Although the box doesnt make it clear, this movie was designed to set the scene for a television series. The acting is below average and the plot is completely unorriginal. The opening scenes see a simple man loose his younger sister who happens to be a genius and then vowes to find her. There's nothing here you havent seen before and the ending might as well say "To Be Continued....". I dont recommend this movie to anyone who likes the science fiction genre.
