This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.

Very interesting film. Was caught on the premise when seeing the trailer but unsure as to what the outcome would be for the showing. As it turns out, it was a very good film.

Entertaining festival entry that combines new wave/punk/80's art school filmmaking style with insane club fashion and a dark, distressing allegory about AIDS, addiction, homosexuality and sexual violence. The characters in the film are generally foul-mouthed, and hedonistic. Much of the stories running time focuses on an androgynous female model surrounded by fashion types, poseurs, addicts and people with violent, abusive sexual behaviour, except the central characters own sexuality kills them.Often the film segues into deeply strange montages of cityscapes, club interiors and fashion items in a way that's totally disconnected from standard film editing language, and the script veers from hilarious to impassioned and descriptive. In a distinct contrast to commercial Hollywood, none of the characters truly have "hearts of gold", and at no point is the audience witness to soaring sentimental pap about human suffering and vague gestures of universality or love, so for that reason in itself Liquid Sky is truly alternative cinema of it's day.The "plot" centres on the idea of a small UFO landing in New York, killing people to harness their sexual energy. It's a metaphor for the AIDS virus before the concept had become widely known in the news media. Occasionally pretentious, or somewhat repetitive, but nonetheless the films distinctively foreign voice and mixture of bizarre audio and lapses into psychedelic montage create an indelibly unique stamp.

I can see what the fuzz is about, but this movie did nothing for me. Reasons for this might be that I was not born yet when this movie was made, I am not a part of any underground/subculture and I have never been to New York. What I did like was the looks of it, at times. They have played around with fashion and punk styles and made something that is at times very iconic. The soundtrack was interesting, and I appreciate it for being ahead of its time. I also liked some of the progressive opinions that Other than what is previously mentioned: this seems to me as a badly made movie. The actors are giving very poor performances, for one. You can say that it was intentional - but that does not make the performances any less forced or annoying. The acting makes this feel like a cheap porn. The plot is probably not to be taken seriously at face value, and while I can appreciate it being used to make a statement on certain lifestyles - it just doesn't work. And it's told in a way that is almost demonstrably unengaging.

Watched it after about 30 years again, and it was still a stunning, shocking and hilarious experience today as it was when I saw it the first time. This was in the mid 1980s in a cinema in Munich where Liquid Sky was shown every week for at least ten years. The only film I am aware of that gained an even more prominent cult status is the "Rocky Horror Picture Show".There are other parallels to the "Rocky Horror Picture Show": Liquid Sky has a similar effect on your mind that could best be described as liberating. It is a bold movie, an attack of sound and color, sex, violence, drugs and crazy characters. What makes all this bearable is the hilarity of the whole story. While normally in movies you are often required to suspend your disbelief to enjoy it, in Liquid Sky disbelief is the rescue line that keeps you sane and lets you enjoy it.Some scenes were burned into my mind forever when I first saw it. However, it is the kind of movie you can watch over and over, like a good piece of art.It is also a child of its time, giving a glimpse into subcultures in New York in the late 70s/early 80s that may have been the avant-garde for the 90s Rave-Culture.Liquid Sky is one of a kind, and you will have missed a life experience if you never saw it.

In New York, a small flying saucer lands on the roof of a penthouse seeking for heroin. In the apartment, the cocaine addicted model Margaret (Anne Carlisle) is a promiscuous bisexual androgynous woman that lives with her lover, the drug dealer Adrian (Paula E. Sheppard). Margaret has sex with many partners asking for cocaine in return. The aliens discover that the sensation of the orgasm is equivalent to the heroin and they suck the brains of Margaret's lovers, killing them first and then making their bodies disappear. Meanwhile, a German scientist is chasing the extraterrestrial beings and arrives in a building in front of Margaret's apartment to observe the creatures. "Liquid Sky" is one of the weirdest films that I have ever seen. When I saw this low-budget cult-movie for the first time in the 80's, I remember that I liked it a lot. However, now I have just watched it on DVD I have found the plot dated and the image needs to be restored. My vote is five.Title (Brazil): "Liquid Sky"
