Highly Overrated But Still Good
Beautiful, moving film.
One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
There are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.
What is this about? Why was it made? I suspect it was so the horny guys who created it could watch a girl walk around naked for the months (weeks?) it took to film this trash. Everyone involved in this production should be ashamed of themselves. I wish this type of exploitation of women was illegal. But is has become so commonplace in the media that nobody seems to care any more. Shame.
TONIGHT SHE COMES is an indie horror that attempts to emulate the genuine nastiness of the EVIL DEAD remake but doesn't come close. The usual bunch of friends (read: cannon fodder) head off to the stereotypical cabin in the woods to look for a missing girl, but all they find are the usual saucy shenanigans. Eventually the girl shows up, starkers, and a demonic possession plot kicks in. This is a film that suffers from run-of-the-mill predictability and lame character work. It attempts to out-do the EVIL DEAD and has some truly grotesque bad taste moments but scary it isn't - just stupid.
With a promising opening scene "Tonight She Comes" gets your hopes up but when the cast is introduced you know you're in for quite a turkey.. The characters are also extremely badly written and do the most stupid things possible when they are in peril. They are horny, clueless and we do not care for them at all. The director tries to mix horror with comedy but fails completely. Worse, the story goes downhill fast and the promising gore melts like snow for the sun. Compared to classics like "Cabin Fever", "It Follows" or even "Evil Dead" this is simply awful. It reminds you of the (way better) "Shallow Ground" but the second half is really a turn-off with lots of dialogue and the dull story doesn't seem to make any sense at all. Even the obvious "John Carpenter inspired" score can't save this mess. Yes, the musical score is the only upside here..
Right from the start we're told this must be played loud as hell and then 70's grindhouse style titles are splashed on the screen. This tells me this flick is gonna rock. Some friends and the mailman, get mixed up in a weird devil cult ritual with the local wackos. Things get very bad. They come through on the soundtrack with the loud synthesizer type music and keep the violence gory. The effects were awesome with plenty of blood. They even use a totally naked woman smeared in blood as the demonic vessel who walks around taking peoples lives. So you'll have to put up with that for most of the film. One aspect of the film you'll like is how they try and break every taboo imaginable just for shock value. For example the two girls are enjoying a bottle of beer as they drive down the road and a guy masturbates in the back seat of a mail vehicle putting the result all over the mail. This stuff happens in the first four minutes, so you know what you're in for. The end was cut short but overall a fast paced, kick ass flick. If you enjoyed Evil Dead this one will be right up your alley.6 donations of period blood for the blood drinking ritual out of 10.
