Too much of everything
what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
Both leads did an incredible job as the anguished parents of a missing child. Their story was mixed with the very interesting and bizarre story of a brilliant friend who, because of mental illness, reverted back to his own childhood. This was mixed throughout the movie with BC's struggle to forgive himself and grieve over his loss. Don't miss a minute of this film!
Spoilers: Your husband dresses like a young boy, builds forts in the woods and you blithely look out your window and ring a bell when supper is ready??? Your child disappears and you don't contact your wife immediately but wait until you're driven home by the police?? You apparently don't work but can afford an huge upscale flat or are we supposed to believe a children's book writer in this day and age can live off royalties??? Or an apparently friendless woman teaching a few hours a week and giving piano lessons can afford a killer stand alone cottage on a large Kent property?. Oh dear. I am someone who cries over diaper commercials but nothing in this contrived out of touch melodrama touched me in any way. Each character was an upper class white Brit - devoid of passion. Everyone said their lines appropriately but what was happening underneath?? Nothing. I kept on hoping it would get better. It didn't. When it ended in a barren hospital room with no monitoring equipment and a woman valiantly giving birth without aid of drugs, I wondered if this script had been written in the '50
I am surprised at the negative reviews for this work. I thought it was a wonderfully gentle film which explored the ineffable sadness of loss - of a friend, of childhood and of a child. This is about what happens after the crying and shouting has stopped. Life goes on regardless - something most of us have to face at some point. When you doubt your own belief and hope and when ghosts haunt your waking days... this is a film about losing a grip on what is 'normal'.I found this film very moving - I did not expect any resolution or for everything to be tied up neatly at the end. Instead we are given a glimpse of adults fighting off despair and trying to find some sense and meaning. It was very well written, accompanied by some beautiful music and filled with excellent camera work. The best TV film I have seen for some while.
Whoopee! Benedict Cumberbatch is in it - that means it's going to be good, yes? Er... no! Does anyone else feel that Mr. C is overrated and overexposed? This movie starts off OK but then we have some trumped up "scientist" telling us that children shouldn't read until they're 12 and then no further mention of it. What was that all about?Mr. C's wife has moved to a country cottage but doesn't seem the least surprised when he turns up on her doorstep, unannounced. Then Mr. C is called in by the Prime Minister to investigate the disappearance of his friend, Charles but we're not told what his connection to the PM is - nor do we care! Also, Charles has regressed to childhood but no real explanation why. Still, there is a happy ending, Charles hangs himself. Then Mr. C's mother tells him that she saw him as a small child before he was born. This has nothing further to do with the story. Then our hero starts taking piano lessons, which, once again, go nowhere. In the end, we go to Charles's funeral and there isn't a dry eye in the house - probably through yawning too much by this stage. Then, lo and behold, Mr. C's wife has a new baby ... THE ENDWhat a waste of an hour and a half of my life.
