The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.

In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.

it is finally so absorbing because it plays like a lyrical road odyssey that’s also a detective story.

It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.

I liked this film. My son - who was very excited to see it because he LOVED Bhoothnath - hated it. He would only give it one star. Here's why. It's not funny. This is a political film. It's not a children's film. Sure, it was promoted as a children's film. My son (who was 8 when this released) was hoping to see it in the theaters(which I'm glad we didn't as he couldn't sit through it - it was that boring for him). The problem is, this is most definitely NOT a children's film. This isn't to say there is anything in the movie a child shouldn't see, it's just that the original Bhoothnath was filled with slapstick and a very touching relationship between the boy and the ghost. This movie is modern Indian political commentary wrapped around a beloved character/actor, which kind of ruins the character. Now - the adult in me - liked the film. There is nothing not to like about Amitabh playing a ghost, even if the ghost becomes a politician. The plot was interesting, but engaging in an intellectual way, rather than an emotional way. I really don't think you can understand the 2014 Indian election of Modi if you haven't see this movie. Because - this movie - probably had an impact on that election. It certainly impact Bollywood's discussion about the importance of voting in the election. So, if you are interested in understanding what the heck is going on in Indian politics, this movie is worth watching. If you want to see another Bhoothnath movie - this one will seriously disappoint you.

While primarily the movie has a documentary like feel to it, the movie isn't a documentary but rather a social commentary about the current political scenario of India. Some good points:-1. Excellent acting by the entire cast 2. Good theme and intent of storySome bad points:-1. Incredibly long and stretched. They could have wrapped up the entire movie in 90 minutes. Sometimes repetitive and boring 2. Trying to be funny but failing miserably 3. No connection whatsover with the previous movie. This cannot be a sequel, its an entirely separate movie.

If it weren't for the sermonizing, and loss of genre context, I'd have given this movie a 10 for effort. More on that later.Haven't seen the first one, so I do not know firsthand how this one compares. However, everyone I know who's seen the first one too, says this is the better effort. I'll take their word for it, since I have no intention of watching the first one anyway, since word is that its quite sappy. The filmmakers seem to have understood that the novelty of having a ghost in the narrative has worn off for seasoned movie-goers, so they kinda go a different route after a little bit of been there-done that. Satire is woven into the tale, though not as much as the movie needs. It turns preachy and sermonizes much past the hour where the audience starts hemming and hawing, and its holier-than-thou position on electoral responsibilities is where it fatally mis-steps, though, considering the milieu, it does what is expected in that department, where everyone gets the message only of its driven home with a sledge- hammer. The makers know this, and try to temper the message by having a few in- jokes at the expense of the celebrity community, but they are too few, and too far between. The positioning of a couple of cameos is also convenient, but does not detract from the preachy, message-brandishing documentary feel overall. The performances are solid/sincere, though Irani does what he's been doing since the Munnnabhai movies, and esp. 'Khosla ka Ghosla'. And this is perhaps the year of Sanjay Mishra, with this and 'Aankhon Dekhi'. Subtlety is an art, and this guy's the master. The technical values are right up there, esp. with the production design with the use of real locations (not the fantasy ones),and the score is above average. Continuity is maintained well, and that is a feat for something out of Bollywood. Neither completely embracing the mainstream nor the niche market, this one's a pretty decent efforts considering what came before it, and today's landscape of movies that are being released.Verdict: I'm sure the tone won't go down well with the independent- minded, but this one deserves an audience for the effort it makes in trying out something different, though they could've done without said hammer.

This film takes the story forward, Amitabh Bachchan was sent back to earth to regain his pride and respect but after seeing the corruption and mismanagement he actually end up contesting for elections. The story of the film is well written and executed.Performance wise, Amitabh Bachchan is at his best, before watching this film, I didn't know that a ghost character can be so loving and caring. The small boy has certainly proved his acting skills, from dialogue delivery to expression, he looks really promising. Well the third lead does not need any introduction, Boman Irani did it again. I believe he is one actor in the industry who can make you like an antagonist of a film. Well a film can only be successful if everybody gives their best to it and that's what happens in Bhootnath Returns. From Amitabh Bachchan to Boman Irani to director to Cinematographer, everybody has done their part wonderfully. It is a must watch!!!!!!
