As Good As It Gets
I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.
This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.
I get that it was supposed to reflect a descent into madness (with memory loss); but it was just too odd for me. Random information discussing situations that really are not that interesting or are the character's taste etc. It seems to have hot the mark for many reviewers and so it may be worth a watch to see if you are among the fans. You will know within minutes whether you will relate to it - so dont waste your time like I did and watch the whole thing (it doesnt improve as it progresses).
This film is a great one worth many viewings. Each time I watch it I either walk away with a new perspective of it or life. It is fairly experimental especially in scene setup and framing. However the director still manages to get his point across each time. All in all it was a really great film that will take many hours and many pages to write about. I will not attempt some of it. The framing of this film is a very interesting one, I have yet to really view a film with the framing to this extent. It was a risk doing this kind of framing-as very rarely is the entire screen "filled". Most of the time it is small blurbs of images and animation. However don't take this as bad, as you will get the "point" each time. Hertzfeldt definitely took a risk, and it definitely paid off. As for the story, I have nothing but praise. You will be taken into the mind of Bill, without spoiling too much, Bill's mind is failing him. While the exact diagnosis is never told, Bill has a life threatening and certainly reality distorting disease/ailment in his life. It slowly but surely affects every aspect of Bill's life, as a result he is left scrambling picking up the fragments of his life be it a past memory that is filled with delusions or even "hallucinations" and delusions in his every day life. I won't spoil the ending, but Hertzfeldt interestingly mocks the audience at the end. The ending itself can be taken in many ways, philosophically and even the way Hertzfeldt mocks traditional endings. Overall the story is nothing short of a masterpiece, one that can be viewed many times with many more revelations the more you watch.
This is the story of Bill, an unassuming and lonely stick figure. His mundane life takes a turn for the worst when Don Hertzfeldt's signature craziness takes over and Bill's world spirals out of control. If you know Hertzfeldt's work, you know this film will have some episodes of freaky comedy that comes from way out in left field, with occasional grotesque monstrosities and dark wit. Some of these scenes make the film humorous and intriguing. It does a lot more though -- the film gradually becomes nuttier and nuttier, until it becomes a sobering reflection on human frailty and mortality. But that's not the end of it. The second chapter kicks in, digging up more of Bill's past and future. Then there's the third chapter, which gives a remarkable upswing and tells a story of Bill having a reawakening. At this stage, the film becomes an inspiring and artistic narrative, suggesting that the human spirit transcends space and time. The entirety of It's Such a Beautiful Day is a complete narrative that chronicles one man's life and drags the audience through all the ups and downs of his suffering. It leads to a wonderful payoff that illustrates the beauty of life and gives hope in the face of death. You might think a movie with stick figure people wouldn't be elegant, but this film is a complex piece of art that incorporates minimalist drawings with raw photography and other real-life elements to paint a composite picture. It is especially notable when the film draws certain lines between the reality Bill sees and the reality he discovers, made apparent when more real-life footage is used at the end. In short, a lot of work went into bringing these stick figures to life, but the world around them is truly vivid. Voice acting and sounds are wonderful and highly effective. The music is quite uplifting as well. It's funny at times, bleak in others, and there are crazy parts. But it delivers a cathartic experience with emotional themes that can resonate with everybody. It's a movie that tells you no matter what you're going through, everything will be okay in the end. People are wonderful. It is such a beautiful universe.5/5
"You are forgiven".It's Such a Beautiful Day is directed by Oscar wining Don Hertzfeldt, has the story is split into three chapters of are main character's life. The main character is called Bill, who's memory is slowly failing and has Absurdism visions. This 62 minute film takes you the viewer on a journey inside this mans daily life and he's past. While watching the movie I quickly noticed that the stick man character Bill was a bit like me in some scenes, for example: he makes up people in his head that don't exist in real life just because everyone around him feels the same, just like me when I was younger. Bill is also awkward to be around and he's not sure about everything really. Straight away Bill is already an interesting character that I understand him deeply as a person. It's very clear that Don Hertzfeldt had a vision and a voice for this movie and all of those two things was seen and heard in this movie, because Don vision came to life in animation. That's the best part of this movie is the animation as it had that moody and yet strangely beautiful feel to it that can't be explained. The animation was intriguing and perfect for a movie like this. It's Such a Beautiful Day is a bold, emotional, intriguing and challenging animated movie. If you haven't seen this movie then I say it's worth checking out.
