Thanks for the memories!
The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny
It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
I've saw the movie "O Palhaço" and my expectation about the movie was positive, because they really show the beginning of the circus, and was just like this. If you compare with a modern circle, you won't like the movie, because they are in another reality. Between the old circus and the circus of nowadays the clown will always be the celebrity. About director, actors, everyone did a great job, same as the soundtrack who gives to the movie the truth perspective, by the way the soundtrack is amazing. So, I recommend this movie.
In the countryside of Brazil, the itinerant circus owned by Valdemar (Paulo José), aka the clown Puro Sangue, travels from village to village to bring happiness to the dwellers. Valdemar's son Benjamin (Selton Mello), aka the clown Pangaré, does not have any document but his birth certificate and dreams on having a fan of his own. Benjamin decides to leave the circus in search for his identity, to settle down in a small town with a steady job and raise a family of his own. However, he returns to the life in the circus with his dreamed fan."O Palhaço" is a deceptive, boring, dull and tedious film by Selton Mello. A couple of months ago, I saw the trailer on television and I expected a great film. Fortunately I have not gone to the movie theater and I feel sorry for those that have gone. Today I have just seen "O Palhaço" on DVD and I really did not like it. It is impressive the number of fake reviews in IMDb promoting this flick. My vote is four.Title (Brazil): "O Palhaço" ("The Clown")
In his second work as director, Selton Mello was able to abstract from simplicity and ingenuous humor an exceptional and complete piece. A very short film, without clichés or redundancies, that touches us as well as makes us laugh at simple scenes. Remarks on the Brazilian dramaturgy pearls recovered in unique scenes. We got to understand the clown's agony without getting blue, and we follow his search for a reason. Exceptionally, the first hour with all its monotony flies and we do not realize. As the last half hour conclusion (with a "golden key", as one would say) widens so we can enjoy every second. Simplicity, ingenuity, genius that make reach the completeness of the show.
This movie is a Chaplinesque adventure which takes place in the rural back country of Minas Gerais, in Brasil. It has moments of laughter, great tension and tears. Great tension because of the circus life and work of the staff at the circus seems to be all the time on the brinks. If a hurricane topple the tent or the truck breaks and no one have money to fix it, it would be the end of the story... A sad end. Tears, because I wept in the final scene, because it is a grand finale: (1) Benjamin shows up in the circus ring, reunited with his father, an old clown, amid the action of the show, (2) the little girl enters triumphantly in the ring with her costume of fearless heroine (who is not afraid to cockroaches) sword in hand, beaming with joy and pride ... it's the new generation of circus people which is starting there; (3) the rest of the troupe behind the scenes weeps of joy for the return of Benjamin, return which is the very re encounter of the troupe with itself. I wept because this finale transmitted to me the following feelings: despite our fragility, if we are together in the battle, we love each other, do our jobs with solidarity, dedication and love, we can overcome all difficulties and our Joy will be eternal. Selton managed to produce a Chaplin adapted to current times in the rural back country of Minas Gerais. Very talented director and actor.
