Divided into four connected sections, the Isao Yukisada's PARADE follows the day-to-day lives of four young people in their twenties sharing an apartment together in Tokyo, looking specifically at each character one at a time. Ryosuke (Keisuke Koide), 21, is a student who works evenings in a bar when he can be bothered and when he isn't too hung-over to make an appearance. Kotomi (Shihori Kanjiya), 23, is unemployed and spends most of her time watching TV for appearances of a popular actor she is dating. Mirai (Karina), 24, is an illustrator and part-time shop clerk who drinks a lot and has some emotional problems stemming from her family background. Naoki (Tatsuya Fujiwara), 28, is a jogging fanatic and seemingly the most balanced of the group. He has a good job, employed with a movie distribution company, but his romantic life is complicated.Somewhat surprisingly, PARADE takes its time to reveal its true nature and intent. It starts out comically, a hung-over Ryosuke slacking around the apartment with the unemployed Kotomi, watching television and the comings and goings of their housemates. In what looks like a standard narrative thread to hold it all together, there are developments throughout around the mysterious goings-on in the next door apartment (are they running an escort service or providing a service for illegal aliens?), and around a series of assaults on young women in the district. It's when another young man, a male prostitute called Satoru (Kento Hayashi), makes an appearance seemingly uninvited (or at least no-one can remember inviting him), that events begin to take on an altogether darker character.Based on a best-selling novel by Shuichi Yoshida, director Isao Yukisada has a difficult twist to pull-off in PARADE. The twist is not a narrative one - the outcome to the two developing mysteries won't come as a real surprise to anyone - but a character one. All of the young people sharing the apartment clearly have personal and emotional problems to the extent that as we learn more about each person, it becomes hard to tell just who is most messed up. Essentially however they seem harmless enough, and their problems are nothing exceptional, all of them suffering from the same sort of romantic problems, questions of identity, ennui and the basic struggle to earn a living as anyone else.What is different about the residents of this one little apartment in this particular district of Toyko is their co-dependence. They are of an age where they ought to be living independent lives, but they don't seem to be able to manage it. Ryosuke talks about their apartment being like a "free space", like an internet chat room where you can join in with the other guests if you want to contribute, but you can leave any time you wish. It's a significant comparison since we all know however how addictive such places can be, even in the virtual world. The apartment and the world seem to be an extension of such inter-dependency, of a faceless anonymity and detachment and a general unwillingness to grapple with reality. Even though Ryosuke, Kotomi, Mirai and Naoki each threaten to move on, even though events seem to come to a head and each reach a stage in their lives where it seems only natural for them to leave the apartment and set out on their own directions, they never quite manage to take the next step.In some respects Buñuel's THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL comes to mind, where the guests of a party find themselves unable to leave the house even though there is no rational or physical reason why they cannot. PARADE is a more modern and realistic application of Buñuel's surreal metaphor for the real and the virtual worlds of today. Whether the youths' failure to leave the apartment and set out on their own is down to their own personal weaknesses, or whether it's an indication of a deeper social malaise related to housing, employment and opportunities for youth of this age group to climb the social ladder, isn't made explicit. What is shocking in PARADE is not so much the violence that raises its head towards the end of the film as much the passive reaction of the residents to it, all of them in it together, none of them willing to break out beyond their mutual dependencies. It gives the subject a broader dimension beyond the individuals in question, and perhaps even has wider implications beyond Japan.

"Parade" is a strange film about five young people, male and female, who share an apartment but hardly knew each other. One girl is obsessed with her eyebrows and her TV soap-opera actor boyfriend. One girl watches rape videos to relax. One guy is a yuppie who likes to run. One guy is a lazy bum student. The newest guy is a meddlesome blond- haired male prostitute. In the two hours of this film, we simply watch these five people go in and out of their apartment, getting involved with their neighbors, their lovers, their curiosities about each other, and a serial killer on the loose in the park. The movie just jumps from one character to the other dealing with random mundane events in their lives. I do not really see a distinct unifying plot. It is all so "stream of consciousness"-like, definitely not for everybody.I guess it is all about how you cannot judge a book by its cover -- how even the most sensible-looking or the most attractive of people have their own share of ugly secrets hidden in their closets. The young actors all did their best in their unusual roles. Unfortunately, everything in the script of director Isao Yukisada felt contrived and unnatural. It did not exactly fly for me.

Its a Japanese answer to "L'auberge espagnole".That's it.Not really the same issue / story but that's the first thing that pop in my mind when watching Parade.I've been watching many Japanese film and drama but almost none of them comprise of bunch of people sharing a house together. I don't really get it but perhaps Japanese don't like sharing a house unless in dire stress or consider privacy their top priority?This film delights me. Perhaps not really original but it's refreshing, coming from Japan.

It seems that this movie had it's world premiere in Berlin (at the International Film Festival), where I had the chance to watch it. It was one of the better movies, that I have watched so far this year. Character study and thriller packed into one movie. And a movie, where you're not sure, where it's going to go next.The fact, that the perspective changes a few times, could have led to a very confusing movie. But the director always has the upper hand and with great editing (and really good acting) he holds the attention of the viewer. And even though you have quite a few characters, you still get a feel for them! And it definitely rewards repeated viewing! I'm looking forward to watch this again!
