It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.

It could have been a really great movie, but it is not. There are a lot to enjoy though, but one can't help noticing too many failings. At first, let me talk about the advantages. The film is like a Christmas tree – bright, full of light and colors, makes you feel a holiday. Very beautiful costumes and decorations. Also the music. I can't say I really like it and would love to have it in my player, but it helps to create some atmosphere, feel this epoch. And the most important, what keeps all attention, is the actors. Unfortunately, not all of them. I need to say that Prithviraj makes me sit and watch without thinking of going to drink some tea, meaning he really acts great! You do believe all the emotions of his character – anger, love, fear, passion, hate, sorrow, envy. He acts so good that a viewer really feels the story of his hero, Gomathi, condemning and understanding him. Sent off by his own father, actually betrayed, he did his best to become someone, to feel loved and needed, to impress his new "father" – the teacher. He worked hard, but his teacher was so indifferent to everything except the art itself that he didn't care at all about the feelings of his students, so even seeing how envy and rivalry was growing he did nothing to prevent. And you feel sorry for the guy. Then someone who actually didn't try hard got it all, and the dreams of Gomathi were being materialized, just not for him, but for his contestant. It isn't a tragedy to fail in your dreams, but it's a real drama to see all you've been dreaming about is happening with someone else, someone who has no honor, no decency, who is not a man even, the only thing he's got is his talent in acting. The scriptwriters made Gomathi a controversial person, not good definitely, but you still pity him. And I do believe here is a huge praise to Prithviraj. On the contrary, the scriptwriters worked poorly on the person of Kali. He behaves weird, with lack of logic, and at the end looks pasteboard. How could it happen with the main hero?! He sleeps with a woman, makes her a baby, then just leaves because the teacher demands. So he is not a man and he is a traitor. And a weak person with no will at all. Gomathi was right saying that he was responsible for what happened, not the teacher. Kali says he loved only one woman, but it doesn't stop him from sleeping with another. Compassion? Oh please! He behaves like a stupid sheep, always obedient. Then please tell me how it happened he became a riot? You got to be kidding! Once upon a time there was a boy, not a man, just a boy, always crying and singing, and being obedient, then one day he stood on the stage and decided that Mother India was being raped by some bad guys and he couldn't stand it. I mean, the scriptwriters, you're serious, aren't you? No tiny hint what made him felt that way, no story behind. This transformation looked unreal and unnatural. Why he became a revolutionary? Just like that – one day you open your eyes, and voilà! you're the one! No motivations, no reasons. Plus if a man has no character, he will never lead people. In my point of view, here is a huge minus of the scriptwriters' work. The hero looks shoddy and weird. Then, Siddhardh. Was very surprised to know he's got awards for this work. Obviously, you must be an Indian to understand why. To my taste, he didn't act, but overacted. All the movie long. He was grimacing from the first moment till the last one. Well, maybe this is sort of a standard for Indian cinema, I don't know, but being a European I see just a cheap circus, not acting. It's even worse having both Prithviraj and Siddharth in one shot as Prithviraj acts really natural, he could be quite good in European cinema, and Siddharth with all his grimaces and hand-wringing looks like he is a kid and it's a school play. Nasser is truly great! And have almost nothing to complain about the girls, though Anaika overacts in some scenes, but not so much, and Vedhika was really amazing. Never seen her before, impressed. After all what do we have? A good potential, but not used. If the main hero behaves with no common sense and logic, you don't believe him. How could the scriptwriters left it this way? If the main actor overacts in his poorly written role it makes the things even worse. And the movie looks like a patchwork quilt – some parts are perfect and some are terrible, and together it is not something you wanted to buy.

Positives: -A never seen before perspective about theater artists in India prior to our independence -Outstanding performances by all actors -Good music by ARRDrawbacks: -Was not gripping at all. Even the story is fresh and unique, it lacked the punch. The script/story is very shallow and lacks depth. -Very average screenplayWish the movie had a better director and a slightly more powerful story. Also, if the movie had a better second half, the overall impact could have been way higher.Just a one time watch, that too only for the amazing performances of Siddharth, Pritviraj, Nasser etc.

Kaviyathalaivan - A Very different kinda movie!! The storyline is not the usual romance based type! Hats off to Vasanthabalan for trying this...! It is like a modern version of an art film! The story is about Koothu- actors/dancers in pre-independence era. Nassar is the lead of a Koothu team. Prithviraj and Sidharth join in at a very young age! Sidharth by virtue of better acting abilities and Out-Of-The-Box-Thinking gets the lead roles and the girls! Prithviraj is jealous... The story revolves around their lives and emotions... HATS OFF TO SIDHARTH! I loved his expressions! I am not sure if he learnt classical dance for the grace in his dance moves. It would have been a treat had Sidharth also acted one role as a female character (As a part of the Koothu shows)! Prithviraj had done a decent job! But Sidharth stole the show!! & Vedhicka (Ganakokilam Vadivambal) had also danced very well... I was hoping for a better role for Kuyili... She could have been used as a Koothu dancer too!! A.R.Rahman could not have made the background scores any better... The music just perfectly suited the movie in every way!! The movie could have have been slightly shorter... But I have no cribs about that!! I rate this movie 3.5 out of 5 but recommend it as a movie worth watching!!
