Paparazzi

Paparazzi explores the relationship between Brigitte Bardot and groups of invasive photographers attempting to photograph her while she works on the set of Jean-Luc Godard's film Le Mépris (Contempt). Through video footage of Bardot, interviews with the paparazzi, and still photos of Bardot from magazine covers and elsewhere, director Rozier investigates some of the ramifications of international movie stardom, specifically the loss of privacy to the paparazzi. The film explains the shooting of the film on the island of Capri, and the photographers' valiant, even foolishly dangerous, attempts to get a photograph of Bardot.

a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.

It really made me laugh, but for some moments I was tearing up because I could relate so much.

"Paparazzi" is a French black-and-white documentary from 1964, so this one is already over half a century old. It was written and directed by Jacques Rozier back then and he is one example of several people working on and in this film who reached a really high age, some of them still alive today. Basically, this film shows audiences how big of a star Brigitte Bardot was in the 1960s and how crazy paparazzi were after her. You can pretty much see this film as a bit of a short documentary version of "La dolce vita". Fittingly, both are in black-and-white as well. But sadly I must also say that I was never really amazed by watching this one and even if it to some extent may be an important contemporary document of his time, then this does not make up for the lack of memorable aspects I saw in here. maybe it is worth checking out for everybody who cares for the history of paparazzi or French (documentary) film in particular, but everybody else can skip it really. I give it a thumbs-down. Not recommended.
