Spooky, Spooky

Years ago, a village head in the Hong Kong countryside executed a man for committing adultery by drowning him in the ocean. His mistress, in attempts to flee the village, dies when she plummets into a pool of quicksand. Years later, people swimming in the ocean mysteriously vanishes, and their bodies wash ashore days later. A local policeman named Lu Hsien who practices Taoist magic believes a water ghost (presumably the ghost of the adulterer) is responsible for their deaths. Therefore, he joins forces with his colleague, Wang Hsiao-Ming, to rid the countryside of this demon before he can strike again. However, Hsiao-Ming is unaware that the ghost of the mistress, having risen out of her muddy grave, fell in love with him and will see to it that no other person falls for him.

This is a ghost comedy from director Sammo Hung - one of many from the martial artist. This one takes place in the Hong Kong countryside, where years ago a village head executed a man for committing adultery by drowning him in the ocean. His mistress attempts to flee the village but dies when she plummets into quicksand. Years later in the present time, swimmers vanish mysteriously, leaving local policemen Lu Hsien (Ma Wu) and Wang Hsiao-Ming (Alfred Cheung) to believe a demon is amok and attempts to solve the crimes and to rid the countryside of the menace that have been haunting the place. The ghost action takes a while to generate in this movie, but the human interaction scenes were quite amusing, from Hsiao-Ming trying to impress his female superior Sgt. Pai (Joyce Godenzi) to him trying to keep the locals from swimming (something reminiscent of "Jaws"). But, the action/horror scenes involving the female ghost (Pauline Yu-Huan Wang) was entertaining. Her in a cat-fight with Sgt. Pai was intense, and then some good old Taoist magic vs ghost action ensues, which is rather fun to watch.More ghost action takes place when the sea demon shows up, possessing people and scary everybody away. It's rather scary stuff, but I thought toward the end, where all the police officers band together to try to defeat the demon, things got quite ***spoiler ahead*** overkill. Too much carnage I thought, and the film could have ended on a better note for being a survival movie. Got a ghost comedy, the ending was rather dark. ***spoiler ends*** Overall, it's more of an average film for me.Grade C+

A man is put in a wicker cage and, before being tossed into a lake and drowning, vows to come back to haunt all those involved in his death. Many years later, people who swim in the same lake are turning up dead, starting with a female swimmer out late at night in an obviously JAWS-inspired scene. Wang Hsiao-Ming (Alfred Cheung) is the weak-stomached new police officer who has the misfortune of patrolling the West Bay area where the killings are taking place. When the first victim's body washes up on shore, he visits white-haired mortician Dr. Queency to get the scoop about what happened and finds out that not only was the woman murdered but the lake area where she was killed is rumored to be "nixed" (is that kinda like hexed?)... Wang also has problems with both the village chief (who doesn't want Wang to cause a stir and drive away business), his hot-headed, stubborn boss and the arrival of a new female police sergeant Pai (Joyce Godenzi), who is one tough cookie. During a teenage beach party, a chubby kid named "Fatty" is killed, and another woman is possessed by the spirit of the murdered man's lover; spurring our heroes into action. They take a boat out to sea, retrieve the corpse of the drowned man and retreat to another more-populated police station where all hell break loose when the corpse comes to life as a super-strong, nearly-unstoppable zombie.Other than ghosts, multiple possessions and a zombie, this throws in references to everything from JAWS to THE THING to BACK TO THE FUTURE to GHOSTBUSTERS to THE EVIL DEAD, without the annoying habit recent movies have of blatantly pointing all this out through irritating know-it-all characters. There's even a funny bit strangely predating the comic disembodied hand scenes from the sequel to EVIL DEAD, which was filmed a year after this one. The first half is slow but still pretty amusing, but the second half picks up the pace in a big way, has plenty of fast-paced (sometimes slapstick) action, gore, special effects, people being thrown around all over the place and other entertaining stuff. It's quite a bit of fun, with some off-the-wall humor, witty one-liners, a spirited cast and characters who are hard to get a handle on at first, but soon become kind of oddly endearing. It's too bad this is a bit difficult to find here in America. My one major gripe (which is certainly not the filmmakers fault) was the quality of the print (a little blurry) and how the subtitles were done (white print over many bright scenes or white backgrounds, which made them difficult to see). Hopefully a major label will pick it up, do a remaster and distribute this title some day so more people can see it.Actor/director Sammo Hung, who gets to play the resurrected zombie in this one, also made the horror-comedy ENCOUNTERS OF THE SPOOKY KIND (1980), which I'll be sure to check out sometime soon.

Spooky Spooky (1986) is another weird ghost film from action director/actor Sammo Hung. Hung has made many ghost stories (many of them are classics) but this one is one of his best (and seldom seen outside of Hong Kong). I have to list his movie as one of my favorites of the genre. It has everything you can ask for from a ghost story (and more). The film is begins hundreds of years ago when a young lover is drowned in the middle of a lake. His spirit has never rested and haunts the locals and pulls a lot of unlucky visitors down to the bottom of the lake. Years later we've come to the present day. The drownings have become more frequent and the locals are scared. One cop (Alfred Cheung) finds the setting idyllic and is at ease until he meets the girl of his dreams, a fellow officer (Joyce Godenzi) who has just transfered to the post. The ghost sitings become more intense with her presence. All hell breaks loose one night when the ghost refuses to leave putting everyone in jeopardy. Seeking refuge from the angry ghost the officers flea to a nearby police station but the ghost follows them. Can Alfred , Joyce ,Ma and the other officers survive the night?Classic ghost film. The film parodies Hung's earlier films, Evil Dead and The Thing. One scene involves a ghost's hand and poor Richard Ng. All of Sammo's and Jackie Chan's Stunt team appearance in this film. The guest stars include Corey Yuen, Yuen Wah, Richard Ng to name a few. A great survival film as well. If you can find a copy I advise you to grab a copy. You will not be disappointed, I guarantee it!Strongest recommendation possible.
