it is the rare 'crazy' movie that actually has something to say.
All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
The main plot is simple, it's about a teenage girl named Cinta and her struggling through her school life when she met Rangga, a lonely boy who is a bit arrogant. Unbeknownst to them, they actually share a similiar hobby, writing a poem. Now, if you have seen The Raid or the sequel, you may think it's the best Indonesian film ever. Well, that's true, the action was beyond spectacular. But in my opinion, Ada Apa dengan Cinta? is an instant classic from Indonesia. It's not always the action what makes it a good movie, but it's the well-written story and the acting that makes us care about these characters.
I must admit that AADC is a movie in my guilty enjoyment list. The only reason why I watched it was because I liked its soundtracks that was on heavy airplay on MTV and couldn't help but catch glimpses of the curiosity-arousing scenes. And I must say, I was not disappointed.I appreciate the elements in this movie that make it so different from the typical soap-ish Indonesian movie... the fact Cinta and Rangga's interests were rare classical Indonesian literature, the contrasting backgrounds of Cinta and Rangga, the school fights, the bomb threats, the goofy humour juxtaposed with scenes that are cold and serious, and a dose of romance that was just right. However, I am mostly grateful for the attitudes Rangga & Cinta decided to have in the end--sticking to their priorities and embracing them by placing their faith in the unknown rather than succumbing to the fairytale-ish pressure to give up their dreams "in the name of love". When Rangga said "I must go," I literally applauded. I just love open-ended, realistic stories that encourage its watchers that it's okay to let go of love and be broken hearted for awhile--in the end you will not regret sticking to your priorities rather. It's about time we stop making movies that promote sacrificing one's future in order to be with one's object of infatuation whose true love is not yet tested--such as the case with The Prince and Me (starring Julia Stiles and Luke Mably). I was fuming mad when Prince Edvard showed up at Paige's graduation and wooed her to go back to Denmark with him--what about her future with Doctors Without Borders??? I am proud that a screenwriter from my country (reputable for the most horrible soap operas in case you don't know) knows better than that. The on-screen kiss was good... chapeau to the director who dared to incorporate it and create the controversy as the first silver-screen Indonesian movie featuring the kiss!I'm quite curious how this movie would feel like in Japanese. By the way, why is it called "Beautiful Days" there, and how would the Japanese audience understand the context of classical Indonesian literature, for instance? (even in Indonesia one rarely finds a teenager who's familiar with the stuff Rangga reads... but at least they'd have previous exposure to some national literature)Anyway, back to Ada Apa Dengan Cinta, everything was very well coordinated--great storyline, excellent choice of actors, fabulous musical soundtrack, and chapeau to Rudi Soedjarwo for daring to go against the conventional!
Ada Apa Dengan Cinta? (`What's Up With Love?') is a 2002's big hit in Indonesia. Many viewers watched it again and over again (especially the teenager audiences). It's no surprise considering that the movie's theme is offers something that closely related to their life. But, it's not all about it. There are a lot of sociological concepts framed in the plot. And it gives the audiences something to take home about. `Being juvenile is not always being part of the peer group. Follow your own heart is much better step to take.'The director made this movie with trying as much as possible to avoid the cliché that a teen flick tends to do and he almost succeed on it. It makes this movie as a positive movie for the teenagers. Much better than a teen movie used to be (hedonism, lack of originality, vulgarism, etc.) The cast is great. Each actor plays their part decently and made the plot's development in much style. Dian Sastrowardoyo does know how to act in front of the camera and she indeed the next best thing in Indonesia. Technically, this movie is a mediocre. The pace is a bit slow, but in general, Ada Apa Dengan Cinta? is a respectable movie.8/10
I just watched this film last week as part of the Indonesian FilmFestival in Melbourne - I'm studying Bahasa Indonesia at schooland am doing a project on kebudayaan remaja - youth culture. Kids, this is a great movie. It's better than any teen flick churnedout by Hollywood in recent memory (it is, I would say, in the 10Things I Hate About You league). It's not great for a 'foreign' movieor whatever - it's great in it's own right. It combines the age-old appeal of teenage romance with enviablefriendship, humour and the poignant sadness of Alya's situation.Cinta is the kind of character girls aspire to - pretty, smart, gutsy asall hell - and Rangga is, well, let's face it, he's hot as all get out. There's some serious messages in this film, about friendship, about honesty, about violence and trust, but luckily it steers frombeing preachy. Maybe it's because the Indo film industry is lessjaded than that of Hollywood, but this movie gets right what somany Hollywood teen flicks have gotten wrong. Watch this movie. Fall in love with it. Trust me.
