A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.

The story-telling is good with flashbacks.The film is both funny and heartbreaking. You smile in a scene and get a soulcrushing revelation in the next.

The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;

The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.

I kind of have a simplistic view of things-I tend to see life as a situation of the Martini drinkers versus the Mojito drinkers....maybe I'm right-maybe not. This film was something that took my mind away from seeing the world as two waring tribes who are diametrically opposed. This film portrays things in the world as very complex & full of hidden avenues and unexpected twists and turns. I found this film thoroughly well done and thoroughly watchable and not at all amateurish or clinical in its portrayal of people, places, and events. It was very realistic and I truly got the feeling of being in a frigid cold place in the midst of challenging obstacles. Daniel Crag was effective in his role as a writer/scholar, in this movie. I think Archangel still rates as one of the worlds great forbidden places so seeing it in this movie was definitely unique. I give it an eight out of ten, not a nine out of ten since Stalin actually still has living relatives in this very day and age. And they are not male. And you don't get to pick your parents. Or your grand parents.

With a surprising pace, Archangel developed a promising story, and continued to be interesting throughout the film, with a few moments of lazy writing. However, after the shootout towards the end of the film, the movie stayed dry until the last scene. I heard some complaints about the ending, but what else did you want them to do? Why do people love the Raiders of the Lost Ark scene where Indy shoots the Swordsman? Because it was just right. Basically, if you love this history period, and you can sit through a drama/thriller, then this film is for you.6.7/10 I'll leave it at that.

Blundered into this on Hulu and wish I had not. The plot is bloated and yet simplistic with few real surprises. Daniel Craig does well enough with his brand of "clenched intensity" style of acting. I can handle slow moving plots and moody "tone poem" film making styles, but this is just pointless wind. There is no real build in the intensity of the story... no real climax. And the action sequence at the end of the film is ridiculous.Joe Stalin Jr. uses a bolt-action Moisin-Nagant to single-handedly wipe out a Russian Spetznaz(Special Forces) unit of about a dozen men... only to die by a single pistol shot to the chest. Booo!

As another reviewer has said, it starts out questionably and then gets deeper and better. It begins in banality and descends into a dark, sinister evil.Craig's character seems like a selfish, repulsive academic opportunist who stumbles on something far bigger than he ever imagined and tries to rise to the threat.The importance of archival research is showcased.The Russian actress is convincing and erotic. The Russian characters are consistent with people I have known.It would be interesting to know more about the background of the film. The plot is entirely believable: it is generally unknown that the Yeltsin government actually considered bringing back Russian royalty from an illegitimate offspring of the Czar. Children of powerful, dominating leaders can have a charisma with the masses which can indeed be psychologically and politically compelling, and actor Konstantin Lavronenko was as convincing as he was chilling as the Young Joseph.The film is also extremely educational about what Stalinism was like and how it has haunted modern Russia ... if less so, with time.Despite some recent attempts at Reversionism in Russia, I don't think neo-Stalinism is a threat there -- considering our past tradition and championing of humanitarianism and democracy, we became worse for a time -- but the film makes you think about what great historical evil was like and where it could head all of us.Lou Coatney
