While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.

Geometria (1987) *** (out of 4)This short from Guillermo del Toro has a teenager failing geometry once again so he decides to bring up a demon in hopes of gaining a wish.GEOMETRIA isn't a ground-breaking film but it's a rather nice one that at least gives you a chance to see where del Toro's sense of humor was at this early stage of his career. The film is technically well-made and features some nice use of colors. I also thought that the demon itself looked quite good and that the story contained a few nice twists that made it interesting. The story itself isn't the most original thing but it's easy to see why del Toro's neighbors and friends probably found him to be strange.

"Geometria" is a 9-minute horror short film from almost 30 years ago written and directed by Guillermo del Toro in his early 20s. I am quite a fan of his Hellboys movies, but obviously you cannot expect that level here already. This is more of a story on diagonals and demons. A student is in danger of failing geometry class and calls evil demons that may help him in this situation. Wow he must have been really desperate. Anyway, del Toro cast even family members for this one, but even if it is not a great watch in terms of story, it is still a decent effort in terms of atmosphere and given del Toro's age, it's a fairly solid achievement. Certainly far more advanced than most other filmmakers in their early 20s, even if this one is not a great watch by any means.

Just a couple of days ago, I happened to see the most recent DVD version of Guillermo Del Toro's CRONOS. Included in the supplements was a short he'd made, GEOMETRIA. I agree with the previous commenter on this page: I've never been very good at math- let alone geometry-, so the plight of the kid in the movie was one I could relate to. His solution to his problem was... inspired, to say the least. The bubblegum-popping demon was hilarious. In an interview also included in the supplements, Del Toro mentions the influence of filmmakers like Mario Bava and Dario Argento; the color palette of GEOMETRIA (not to mention everything he's done professionally) certainly bears this out. If you're a fan of Del Toro's, or a fan of well-made horror shorts, check out GEOMETRIA.

I am not the best at math, or Geometry for that matter, so I could really relate to it. I really loved it and the twist at the end is just wonderful! It is a very short film, but it does not need to be a 3-hour lord of the rings movie. It's in Spanish with English subtitles. I saw the new 2010 version on the Blu-ray edition of Cronos. The song used for the end credits does not really fit the movie, but I really liked the effect it gave, which was similar to the end credits in Evil Dead. In an interview I watched before the film, Guillermo del Toro said that the use of magenta and dark blue colors really gave the film a nice effect. I can still remember watching the Dario Argento films like Susperia and Phenomena, and feeling that they had the same use of colors. The music in Geometria is very 1980's electronica with great use of synthesizers. I would rate the film a 10 out of 10. It's my favorite short foreign film.
