Together with Fien de la Mar and Jan van Ees he founded the 'Nieuwe Tooneel' theatre company in 1932. Because of his natural comedic timing, his first on-screen performance in 'De Jantjes' (released abroad as 'The Tars') made him a fan favourite and launched his succesful cinematic career.
