i must have seen a different film!!
Highly Overrated But Still Good
A Disappointing Continuation
Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
Catherine Hardwicke twists the tale of Red Riding Hood for the Twilight generation. She adds a touch of the Witchfinder-General in it too.Amanda Seyfried gives an blank performance as Valerie, a much too perfect girl in a medieval village by the forest which has been terrorised by a werewolf for some years during a full moon. The werewolf has been kept appeased by being offered livestock as a sacrifice. However when Valerie's sister is killed by the werewolf. Father Solomons (Gary Oldman) turns up as a werewolf expert. He thinks someone in the village is a werewolf, he even hunts witches as well. When Valerie discovers she can talk to a wolf one night, she is accused of witchcraft and tied up to burn. Will Peter the woodcutter the man she loves be able to save her? Why does she keep having strange dreams about her grandmother? This is a pretty campy and tepid film. A banal story with little resemblance to the well known fairy tale.
Most of the people didn't like this movie, but l enjoy...maybe the old tale has been changed but the primary elements was good enough. Althroug is a Studio's movie without external scenes and helped by graphic computer the movie works... and with the cast like Gary Oldman,Julie Christie and Virginia Madsen together with Amanda Seyfried and the young actors hold the picture...the false track in the script let the viewers confused who is the beast anyway....good entertainment really.
While Red Riding Hood isn't one of my favourite films it is still entertaining, enough to get 9/10. Also I haven't seen any other film of the director (that means I haven't seen Twilight). The soundtrack ties pretty well with the atmosphere, as well as the backgrounds, even if not everything is accurate to history, and that's noticeable throughout the film. CGI works well and the werewolf doesn't look terrible. The kills aren't something gruesome but the movie has some. The story is interesting, I like the references to the fairy tale and the ending is nice. The love portion doesn't get on my nerves. While nice acted, RRH can be somewhat dull and some characters are forgettable.Despite that, Red Riding Hood is enjoyable. I wouldn't mind however a film with more action - a Red Riding Hood Hensel & Gretal: Witch Hunters kind of movie (H&G:WH is awesome) with werewolfs.
I must admit that I actually enjoyed this movie. I found it to be more of a Mystery than a horror movie. Amanda Seyfried, Gary Oldman and Julie Christie actually carry their respective parts rather well. I especially liked the way Gary Oldman played the Werewolf hunter Father Solomon. Even the Werewolf was done well enough. The suspense could have been drawn out a bit more but the action wasn't bad. It's an interesting take on the original folklore and I had heard similar versions before. The love triangle was an interesting touch but I do believe that could have been developed better. All in all a good movie but needed a bit more development before it went to production. The soundtrack was actually done very well and allowed the emotions for some of the scenes to be done very well. I also enjoyed the scenery which I found to be well executed.
