So much average
As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.
The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties. It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
Its super weird how Matrix, Existenz and this movie all came out in 1999. If you enjoyed those 2, you'll probably like this one as well. I did have one problem with it tho. The adr was terrible and it constantly put me off. Other than that, it was a good sci-fi/crime.Its about a guy who is a partner in a company which is experimenting with augmented reality simulations. His boss gets murdered and he is the prime suspect. He is trying to make sense of whats going on.
For some reason I came into this movie expecting an alien movie, so I was a bit surprised at the plot. It's a good science fiction concept: the world is a computer simulation that we are trapped in. I seem to recall another movie with a similar story that also came out in 1999, and that one largely overshadowed this one.'The Thirteenth Floor' is one of those movies that just works. It's not very emotional and it's not particularly thought-provoking either, and there's not much to mention in terms of visuals or characters, but the basic story is compelling and there's no filler, no useless padding, no insultingly bad humor, nothing that would make the movie 'bad'. It works but doesn't go much beyond that. Craig Bierko, the lead actor, is forgettable. Gretchen Mol is easy on the eyes but delivers a shallow performance. My favorite part of the movie was when it was revealed that (spoilers inbound) above our simulation reality there are beings that look into our reality, and that the girl is one of those, and that she merely assumes the form of this girl in this reality. I thought that opened up room for anything - maybe because I had those expectations of aliens - that the girl might not actually be even human, that she could be anything, any unimaginable thing in another inconceivable universe, and that really gave me the chills. But it turns out that her true form is actually exactly the same as her form in the simulation and the world 'above' ours is just our world in the future. What a drag.
Computer scientist Hannon Fuller has discovered something extremely important. He is about to tell the discovery to his colleague, Douglas Hall, but knowing someone is after him, the old man leaves a letter in the computer generated parallel world his company has created.Right off the bat, I have to say how good of a role this is for Vincent D'Onofrio. He has spent much of his career in mediocre roles, but should be praised for the great actor he is. This should go right up alongside "Full Metal Jacket" and "Daredevil".Beyond that, this is a great mind-bending science fiction film, with virtual reality and worlds within worlds. Things may not be as they seem. In a very general sense, it shares some common themes with "Dark City", which came out around the same time. Strangely, "Dark City" is the better known film, though they are equally good science fiction detective stories.
The story on this movie is amazing, but the only reason I say it was OK, it's because for some reason while I was watching the movie, I felt like I was watching a crappy movie. I'm not sure if it was because of the actors, the production, the mood or what, But I feel this movie could have been illustrated better, specially when it has such an amazing story. When you compare this movie to the matrix, you can see how different they, regardless of how similar the story is and the action effects. The matrix has a more serious and mysterious mood, which makes the movie more interesting, but the thirteen floor, they come and say what's going as if their research project was something very feasible, and not so amazing. They way the story was unraveled was weak, that's my point.
