Good movie but grossly overrated
In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
Do yourself a favor and watch this movie up to the point where the first guy gets sprayed with "water." Turn it off after that. At that point you'll have seen the only decent gore, and you will be spared the boredom and stupidity that is the rest of the "plot." This movie adds absolutely nothing. The gore is lame, the story is laughable, the acting is poor, and the plot holes are bigger than the cube itself.Just some examples. The helicopters can be heard at the lake as soon as they are scrambled. So the base is right next door? How could they possibly get away? The woman's daughter magically appears in the last scenes in the forest. Where did she come from? The "people upstairs" have to come down to the tech room to operate the controls and find the rogue tech guy? Really? With all their tech, there isn't another control room somewhere? Okay, so they have computer eye implants, chips in people's brains, and the means to build a cube... but they can't find one guy in the cube? Even though every room has a camera? Hello, how about a single mosaic channel showing all rooms? Or a motion sensor? Blah, blah, whatever. Not wasting time typing more. I figured with a 5.7 rating it can't be that bad, but it was just dreadful. How anyone can rate this higher than a 3 is beyond me.
I have seen this film twice, and I love it. What a great break from mainstream entertainment. It delves into the people and the organization who run and monitor the cube which I assume anyone reading this will know what I'm talking about, so I won't bother summarizing. I think it has plenty of commentary on the abuse of government power under totalitarian rule disguised as a democracy. The traps are cool for horror fans out there and characters actually have arcs in this movie even if they are rather predictable and the acting is about par for this type of movie. Even with these few complaints I still enjoyed myself while watching it both times and the ending I loved the first time I saw it, however, I really really want another movie in this world as a lot of dialogue hints at the outside world and people involved in the operation of the cube but still leaves a lot to be desired by curious fans, but we will likely have to wait and hope the reboot explores more of both the cube and the organization/government involved. I gave this movie an 8 because the movie is good but I still have so many questions about this world that weren't answered. Overall, I definitely recommend sci-fi fans check this one out if you haven't already!
If "Cube Zero" was an attempt to right the ship after the mistake known as "Cube2: Hypercube" then it was a failed attempt. They did nothing to restore credibility or goodness back to the franchise. The acting was just as poor if not poorer and there was nothing new except more scenes outside of the cube.If I can comment on the acting for a bit because I feel I must. Now I believe that the pitiful acting is on purpose. For the actors to deliver their lines like they are doing voice overs for kung fu movies or doing voice overs for chipmunks just doesn't make sense. Their words were abrupt and choppy like they had to suddenly stop talking or they'd run out of breath. Nothing about their acting was good--the delivery of the lines, their facial expressions and their expressions of different emotions. Even if the plot was good they would have sank it.Back to the story. Again, like "Hypercube", they fed us a little more information about the cube's purpose and who may be behind it. This is supposed to be a prequel so the cube you know in "Cube" is pretty much the cube you see here. Still, after having watched all three parts to this series I don't understand the significance of the cube participants. It tries and fails to explain "Cube": the reason for its existence, who's behind it and why we know so little behind the characters. I don't know if it's fair to say they tried to explain because they really didn't. They just added more confusion and more mystery to a mysterious thing. This installment from the Cube trilogy is less intelligent, less creative and filled with more deus ex machinas (plot devices whereby a seemingly unsolvable problem is suddenly and abruptly resolved by the contrived and unexpected intervention of some new event, character, ability or object). "Cube Zero" at least forecast it's ability to be entertaining: zero.
CUBE ZERO, the third and final instalment of the CUBE trilogy, is a prequel to the first movie that attempts to explain more of the background behind the cube installation in an interesting and entertaining way.The writers achieve this by presenting another round of participants battling against the various traps and tribulations, which are the goriest yet; the opening death sequence is grisly in the extreme and like something out of WISHMASTER. Running concurrently with this plotting is a behind-the-scenes scenario which shows something of the men who control the cube and their reasons for doing so.CUBE ZERO is a resolutely low-budget B-movie that gets by on genre goodwill, enthusiastic performances from a game cast and some effective special effects. Michael Riley's robo-eyed baddie is by far the most fun, but the rest of the characters work too - and, as ever, watching their interactions is a whole lot of fun.The twist ending is particularly worthwhile as it ties into the first CUBE in a neat and surprising way. This series may not be one to set your world on fire, but as ever, CUBE is a whole lot of fun.
