if their story seems completely bonkers, almost like a feverish work of fiction, you ain't heard nothing yet.

Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.

It is encouraging that the film ends so strongly.Otherwise, it wouldn't have been a particularly memorable film

A fantasy driven adventure from Disney with Nicolas Cage at the helm. Cage has done a lot of bad films over the recent years and seems to only take direct to video roles, but this style of film was a switch for him and favorably so.Balthazar Blake (Cage) an apprentice under merlin with two others is a master sorcerer and in modern day New York to search for the next master. Balthazar comes across a young boy Dave (Jay Baruchel) and finds he is next in line in the bloodline of Merlin. So forth comes the immediate training of sorcery to Dave as they battle Balthazar's former friend now arch rival Horvath (Alfred Molina). The special effects and magic sequences really drive the film and the CGI is patterned perfectly. The pairing of Cage and Baruchel is fun, witty and comedic in many cases, while Molina brilliantly plays the antagonist. The film is a fun day for the family to sit through and enjoy. I give it a 7 out of 10

Moderately entertaining, this fantasy of evil traveling 1500 years to the big Apple is mixed to the core. Fortunately, it's a story of good first evil but as its is center around Hollywood obsession with black magic, it gets to be weather disturbing in spots. At least history is used, with the legendary magician Merlin at the center of the opening of the film we're good and evil are locked together in some sort of mythical bottle and end up in modern- day New York in the hands of a troubled youngster who find himself humiliated in front of his classmates when he encounters good and evil magicians in a building and ends up coming out looking like he's with his pants. Ten years go by, and he is apparently back to normal, sorcerers both good and evil are after him for completely different reasons.Nicolas Cage represents good while Alfred Molina is definitely on the side of the dark hearts, desperate to get his hands on the bottle that contains the spirit of sorceress Morgan La Fey, the thistle in the side of Merlin during the King Arthur era. So with magic both black and white going all over Manhattan in order to keep Le Fey from escaping in order to bring out all the evil dead back to destroy the world, Cage becomes mentor towards Merlin's alleged descendant who has the common sense of a central park pigeon. This is OK family fare for ages 10 up, it gets rather silly at times, leaving adults often looking at their watches. It also gets rather repetitive, seemingly taking forever to get to its conclusion. Dozens of similar movies have dominated the big screen since the beginning of the millennium, and this is no better or worse than the mist mediocre. A tribute to the sequence in "Fantasia" is most obviously the highlight. Otherwise, this is just formula fluff with little point.

We really liked several things in this movie. First, of course, Alfred Molina, who never disappoints. Talk about actors whom I'd like to have a conversation with one day and Alfred Molina tops my list. Then the sets and backgrounds, the humor, other actors like Tony Kebbel as Drake Stone, Nicholas Cage as Balthazar. We were not too fond of Jay Baruchel, but then again, he wasn't bad either. The great flaw of this movie was that it should have been two movies. The story is great, but feels way too rushed. The whole explanation part with Balthazar and Horvath being friends and falling out over Veronica as apprentices of Merlin could easily have filled the first movie. Still, this movie was made with lots of energy and fun, and that shows in the end result. It deserves better than the ratings it got. That first movie could have ended with Balthazar and Horvath disappearing into the Chinese vase.

Like Season of the Witch, this movie feels a little cursed, for no visible reason. Correction: no visible reason except for an actor from the main cast, Nic Cage. This is one of the few Disney movies that I enjoy. It has a great cast, plot, lore, action, special effects, acting, and musical score. With some good characters, this movie can at times, be very memorable. Parts like the final fight and the Chinatown Sequence, stick into your mind like silly puddy. This movie follows that guy who voices Hiccup from How to Train Your Dragons, as he goes from college loser, to Merlon's successor, known in this film as the "Prime Merlonian". Nicolas Cage as Balthazar Blake, Merlon's apprentice, trains whatever his name. The jealous Horvath, one of Merlon's other apprentices tries to resurrect the evil Morgana le Fey, to end the Prime Merlonian and Balthazar. It has this implacable vibe, that is very cool. Some nods to stuff like Fantasia and One Republic (mainly because their song Secrets was popular when this came out). It's a weird, modern magic film that is far more appealing to me than any Harry Potter film, which is why I give it an 8/10. It's a good film and a good watch.
