Fresh and Exciting
Brilliant and touching
"Airplane!" is a unique American comedy film where the satire and the silliness flow naturally, where the comedy stems from a plot deliberately not taking itself or its characters at all seriously, and where the witty retorts and the Pythonesque surrealism abound and coalesce brilliantly into a hilarious work of genius. I adored all the puns, the wordplay, the exaggeration... This is one of my favorite comedy films now. It's what would happen if American comedy allowed itself to be a little more British.
Some people hate planes because of 9/11. If a security checked plane ride scares you, then you definitely don't want to be on the plane in "Airplane!" The plot follows a plane with a stupid pilot who ends up nearly crashing the plane. Well, he has an inflatable co-pilot, and when he deflated, the air hole is at his crotch area. He also serves fish that makes everyone sick. This is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen, and even the AFI(American Film Institute) names it the 10th greatest comedy of all time. My favorite part involves a little girl who needs to go to the hospital and her IV is pulled while a woman is singing to her. There is also a man who tells boring stories...so boring that the people who hear them actually take their lives to avoid hearing them. That wouldn't be funny in reality, but here it works. I could tell you more funny parts, but you should see it yourself. You surely won't be disappointed. And don't call me Shirley!
I really LOVED this movie. Airplane is a parody of disaster movies. While flying, both pilots and many on board get food poisoning from the fish. There is only one person left on board who is not sick and knows how to fly a plane. The problem is that he has never flown a plane this size over the years he has developed a phobia of flying a plane. He must face his fears in order to save himself, his lover, and all of the other passengers. This movie has some corny parts that I didn't find funny, but it still consistently made me laugh. I will definitely watch it again.
Let's begin with me saying something about me: I am in my late 20's and English is not my mother tongue, although I can defend myself in English with no problem. Why is this important? Well, I was learning to count when this movie was having acne. Even then I could get a good account for the jokes. The job in this movie is astounding for its time. Even the effects are good for its time. The script was simple but effective. The music was fitting most of the time (except the disco part) and the actors were having the time of their life: They gave everything they had for a laugh and they got it.Some of the verbal jokes (I can remember the one with Reagan and the married girl one) are totally outdated nowadays, but it holds as a whole. Some of the jokes are such a classic (Stop calling me Shirley, the sweaty arrival, the taking of pictures, the 'This was a bad week to stop X', the calming lady) that they could not be ever forgotten. Even the disco section was funny, although i feel it overly long. It has something for everyone: dark jokes, physical comedy, white jokes, puns, effect comedy... The best part is simply that the movie does never take itself seriously, which actually makes it better to watch. One of the best, although a little out of date. Would watch again.
