I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.
It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
Yet another trash movie about a young teen played by an adult, who is also a model..... Nothing in this movie is believable. No wonder young girls have so many image problems these days. This is a sickly sweet feel good till you vomit religious propaganda version of 90210.How is it that so few people have noticed the gratuitous liberty taken with the original story in order to market unhealthy lifestyle choices to young women while being disguised as Christian propaganda in order to gain fake support. The moral of the story is that all the hard work and training she did to recover was a waste of time. Her imaginary friend fixed everything after she begged and pleaded enough. Its one of the most disturbing films I have ever seen. Not suitable for young children or teens. I wont be showing it to my girl child who is just learning to surf.
This was one of the worst movies i have ever seen (i know that's a stretch) It was religious propaganda through and through. My biggest problem was the bad story telling and lack of any good performances. While the actual story of this girl is an interesting one the movie was not. it lacked realism (it was one of the worst shark attack effects i have ever seen. I watched this movie as part of a leadership class and by the end i wish i had of stayed home sick instead. This movie reminded me a lot of Patch Adams. everything was super happy and perfect. Every character felt so fake. Let me not forget Kevin Sorbo whom i have always loathed. This movie is not even so bad it's funny status. There is no redeeming qualities on display in this dreadful cinematic dive bomb. all and all bad movie, 1 star.
"Soul Surfer" is a based-on-fact film about the life of Bethany Hamilton, an optimistic, blissful young girl who rode lots of waves, lost an arm, and rode lots of waves some more. Back in 2003, when she was just thirteen years old, Bethany's left arm was bitten off by a shark. Now she is a champion surfer, renowned in her field of sport and admired by people worldwide who share similar disabilities. What we have here is an incredible, inspirational story that's overshadowed by lazy, uninspired movie-making. In "Soul Surfer", Bethany's life has been reduced to formula, filtered through a lens of familiarization. The raw power of her story becomes covered with so much bland, Hollywood melodrama that very little of it makes is retained in the final product. Aaron Ralston should be pleased with what Danny Boyle did with his story; "127 Hours" was one of the best movies of 2010. However, if I was Bethany Hamilton, I'm not so sure if I would be pleased with what Sean McNamara did to my story. There is the distraction of another surfer named Malina. She appears in the same competitions that Bethany participates in. She is that character who is selfish, and mean, and willing to play dirty if that's what it takes to win. Malina is only here to fill the role of a villain in a movie that doesn't need one. Is there really room for a character like her in a film dedicated to Bethany Hamilton? Another problem is the dialogue. Because the movie's aim is to inspire, we understand it for engaging in its epiphanies and being vocal about them. The mistake is in the decision to prolong them. It extends simple insights into lecture's length, as if we need extra space to get its point.Read more here: http://localmoviereview.com/soul-surfer-movie-review/
Soul Surfer is based on the true story of Bethany Hamilton, a prodigious young surfer who lost her arm in a shark attack. It focuses on themes such as faith, determination and bravery and these themes are delivered with enough vigour and emotion to please Hamilton and the majority of viewers, too. AnnaSophia Robb, who plays Bethany, does what she does best by getting injured and making you feel sorry for her. If you're looking for an actress to play the ultimate damsel in distress, she's the one to pick. Aside from being a sympathy magnet, though, she is also a very good actress, and although she's acted better in some of her other movies (see 'Bridge to Terabithia') she delivers a sound performance as the lead. The rest of the cast are good (with the exception of Jeremy Sumpter, but he's just there to attract a female audience so I won't have too big a go at him), and the script, while cheesy in places, is generally quite good. There is a major problem I have with this movie, though, and that is the fact that the whole thing is horribly manipulative and Christian-orientated, and even though I was raised a Christian myself I couldn't help but feel irritated that an otherwise good film was turned into what is essentially Christian propaganda. The story leads you to believe that Beth was given the confidence to return to the water only by her faith that God had a plan for her. OK, but wouldn't it have been more inspiring for her to have kept going without God's help, proving that she is strong enough to shrug off what happened to her on her own? Other than this issue, I think this is a genuinely well-made and acted movie, so it gets a respectable 7/10 from me.
