Excellent but underrated film
The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.
There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.
This movie is a perfect portrayal of mental illness. A subject tackled with a heart rendering and human approach, it shows us that mentally ill people aren't broke, they're not less human and less functional than others, and they can be more compassionate and caring than "normal" "healthy" people. In general, mentally ill people are just people who had it hard in their life. In this film, it's showed through the lovely Lars, a very sweet, kind-hearted and thoughtful man, yet he suffers from feelings he hindered inside during his whole life, his mother died after his birth, taking care of his depressed sick father alone while his "healthy" brother ran away, add to it loneliness. So to cope he builds a deep relationship with Carmin, a sex doll. But, sex isn't what's on his mind, Lars finds in Carmin an outlet that encourages him to externalize his repressed feelings by expressing them through her. But what touched me the most besides lars himself is the support, consensus, and solidarity of this small commuity that decided to go along with it and help him heal, and that worked! this movie shows the wonders an understanding and open society can achieve by including, accepting and supporting each other. everyone treated lars as an equal and with love and respect and that was soul-stirring and tear-jerking. I really loved this movie for all those reasons, plus it's fun and funny too it can't but draw a smile on your face and teach you a valuable lesson in empathy and tolerance.
A delusional young man strikes up an unconventional relationship with a doll he finds on the Internet. Lars and the Real Girl is a weird love story and yet somehow it's so sweet, dramatic and even inspiring at times because it felt real. Ryan Gosling deserved an Oscar for his perfomance, each scene he is in he steals it he is just incredible, Emily Mortimer and Paul Schneider are also great. This is a film that lot of people won't understand that will hate it and turn it off but for those who want to see something great, something unique and beautiful go and rent it or even better? Buy it!!!
Sources of pain and anxiety become sources of strength and wonder in this transformative and compassionate film that imagines a new way of thinking about mental illness. Lars, a reclusive yet sweet and considerate young man, suffers from a delusional disorder and crippling social anxiety. The slightest touch or briefest conversation brings him intense discomfort. Friends and relatives attempt to coax Lars from his shell, yet he manages to elude them. Matters reach a crisis point when Lars begins to appear around town with and talk to a life-size doll. Many people treat Lars like a freak and press to admit him to a hospital. Others wonder what the big deal is about and are willing to play along with the delusion. They see that Lars just wants to be treated normally and not judged, and is attempting to work something out for himself. The latter crowd wins the day and soon the whole town is reaching out to Lars and the real girl with empathy and compassion that is stunning even to Lars.Ten years after the release of this insightful and touching film, communities are still struggling with this issue of sympathy and acceptance for the mentally ill. Dealing with mental illness is not necessarily a bad thing. The film rightfully points out that we are all a bit crazy, each in our own way, and people tend to take things too personally. The real issues involved can be about communication or a way to work something out. Ryan Gosling shines in this film. His performance here paves the way to stardom. The supporting cast is wonderful too. There is depth to the scenes and dialogues, and everything comes together well. Whole communities can be transformed in a positive way when people respond, as they do in this beautiful film, to potential problems with empathy and love instead of fear
Although it's not the most technical masterpiece out there in terms of sound or camera-work, it does fully encapsulates drama. I was thinking that I was either going to find this creepy or hilarious, but Gosling delivers a great dramatic performance. He really loves this inanimate sex doll and I can imagine that must had been a challenge for him on set, so it shows how fantastic of an actor he is. This truly is a great depiction of how mental illness can be and how it affects family and friends. Underrated and a great original concept!
