Boring
Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny
How can anyone remake a movie, and then remove what made the movie so great to begin with?! The shocking ending. They changed the ending! This remake is not only an insult to the original, but a crime against film making. You take a really good Asian suspense movie, replace all the suspense with cheap jump scares, and then chicken out with the shocking ending. The people who made this need to apologize. This was a shameless cash grab. Plus, Jessica Alba can't act to save her life.Do NOT watch this movie! You owe it to yourself to watch the original, and ONLY the original. Its not like an American audience can't read subtitles, so just do yourself a favor. Go watch the original with subtitles already.Merciful Zeus, how could they remove the shocking ending?! How can you do that?! I just don't understand it. Seriously, what is the point?! If you're going to remake a movie, why take out what made it great to begin with?!
I have not seen the original 2002 Asian movie that this remake is based on. However, I do have a feeling that the original must have been a lot better that this. There is a very familiar deja-vu feeling to just about all of this movie. Every plot twist and turn came across as tired and unoriginal. Needless to say, this also extends to the so-called scares. There is nothing creepy or frightening about the horror sequences. I think the reason for the lack of frights is that the movie, while somewhat low budget, is all the same too slick for its own good. A gritter and less polished approach would have probably helped things significantly. In the end, the only interesting part of the movie are the opening minutes, showing the blind heroine going through life with her handicap and learning to adjust once she gets her sight back. Had the whole movie been about all that, I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more.
Violinist Sydney Wells has been blind since age five. She receives a cornea transplant to recover her sight. She slowly regains her vision but also gains mysterious hallucinations. She makes friends with a patient Alicia (Chloë Grace Moretz) at the hospital. Her sister Helen (Parker Posey) who feels responsible for her blindness tries to help. Dr. Paul Faulkner (Alessandro Nivola) is her new doctor helping her to adjust.Based on a Chinese horror, this is a pretty slim movie with few actual frights. It doesn't have any moodiness for atmosphere. It's not particularly creepy. The vision isn't handled with the best imagination. It's a lot of music cues to highlight visions. My question is why does her visions talk to her if she only did the eyes. So she sees not only memories but the future, death, and ghosts. It's a mishmash of random interior movie logic. There is nothing particularly wrong in this movie aside from the fact that there is nothing particularly right. Then there is the climax which isn't setup that well and seems to come out of nowhere.
I think this film really proves that Jessica Alba can act! She has been typecast as a pretty girl / eye-candy, and not given a chance to prove her acting ability. While this film has faults, as do all films, I think it proves that she can connect with emotional reactions, and facial expressions needed for serious roles. She plays the part well, and can really display the anxiety and paranoia that can be felt when someone 'looses their mind'.Maybe everyone will disagree with me, which is fine, but I, for one, am very impressed by Jessica : Her portal of Sydney as a character is very believable, and very different from the type of roles she's been typecast in. She proves that beauty can also have acting wings : Go you!So there!
