It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.

A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.

Trapped in their small southwestern town, a troubled sheriff and a prospector find a deadly creature released from a local archaeological dig and must save the locals from the ravenous creature. There was a lot to like with this one as it was a great creature feature. One of the better elements at work is the impressive amount of attention paid to the creature and it's mythology within the story, as not only is the actual mythology enjoyable but there's more throughout the film that carry this along. The discovery of the embedded claw from the accident as well as the resulting study of it as well as the running storyline about the cattle mutilations from the creature's acid venom that really set-up the imposing mystery about the strange creature running around that plays nicely with the creature being kept in the shadows for several attacks that give it a great action sense altogether. That mixes nicely with the cave-drawings and all the deciphering done at the site when it goes into the story of the creature and the local tribes is all quite fun. There's also quite a large amount of action-packed encounters here that are quite fun and make the best aspect of the film by augmenting the fun story with fantastic encounters, as the early encounter around town show off the fine scenes in the garage and the extended chase in the town are really enjoyable. Even more enjoyable is other big scenes here in the first half at the house where it break the house apart in a massive sequence, a series of incredibly fun chases through the desert and a rousing finale which gets some exciting chasing and shootouts with the creature in the race to get away. Even more impressive is the encounters in the desert camp as there's a lot of chases through the area, tense encounters in the local caves and really brings out a much more frantic pace that gets a lot out of it for a highly effective sequence. As well, with the unique creature design, these here are the film's positives and manage to hold off the minute flaws here. The biggest issue is the CGI creature, which features all the traditional hallmarks with spotty execution, completely unnatural actions and continuous size-changing in the scene that is usually found here and really robs this one of the goodwill from elsewhere. The other real flaw is the film's last half where it's almost all filmed with glow-sticks that places a rather challenging light on these scenes during the best parts of the movie and make it nearly impossible to make out. These are what hold this one down.Rated R: Graphic Violence and Graphic Language.

What did the team behind 'Unearthed' really unearth: horror or terror? If films could be terror this would be a candidate. The characters are uninteresting, unsympathetic and the plot (if you want to use that word) moves along at a snail's pace and never manages to be anything other than mediocre and quite frankly boring. The characters are, as mentioned above, uninteresting. They seem to be written with great haste, taking all of the clichés one could think of. We have the sheriff with a dark past (a female sheriff, actually, which is kinda rare to see so not knocking the film for that), her socially-awkward friend, and her wimp of a deputy. We got ourselves two mystical Indians, an elder and a younger, more action-minded guy. We got the stereotypical "Big City-Man" and a young teenage-something crew. See? All present and accounted for. And of course the villain. The alien. Or monster? I don't know because it seems they ripped it's design right out of 'Alien". They just added a few more eyes, thats it. It's Alien. The plot isn't really there. Granted there seems to be a story behind it all but it's vague and thin at best. We never get to a point of satisfactory storytelling due to one fatal flaw: what's going on?! It just started and ended, and allow me to be frank: you'll be praying for the ending before you know it. You'll be bored and annoyed at the same time, and you'll be amazed by how that's even possible. Granted, the story seems to evolve around some dig-site, or whatnot, and the monster has something to do with that, but other than that your guess is as good as mine. Keep in mind, I just watched the film. That's bad news.Technically the movie is a mess. The camera is unsteady and juggling about uncontrollably when it doesn't need to, and the music is forgettable. The editing is frantic during action-scenes, limiting our ability to actually see what's going on, and this is the same problem that Christopher Nolan had with 'Batman Begins', but he's one of the best. If he couldn't pull it off, then just imagine how bad it's pulled off here.Anywho, give it a go if you're an aspiring director and want to see what not to do, but do not expect to unearth a gem - only Hell lies beneath.

This movie was part of the Afterdark Horrorfest? That was very hard to believe. But then again, some of the Afterdark movies are simply phenomenal, while others are ... well, not so much! "Unearthed" fall into the latter category. The story is about some alien creature terrorizing a small desert community called Hat Creek. And it is up to sheriff Annie Flynn, couple of residents and some out-of-towners to deal with this alien menace. End of story summary! I think this movie's plot and story must have worked out well on script paper, but it translated poorly into an actual movie. The story was linear, which was good, so it was easy to follow. Problem was that it was just too much, and too unbelievable. And the characters were just randomly picked and thrown into the lot, without having any connection to anything. The creature in "Unearthed" was actually really nicely made, though it was so painstakingly a copy of the creature from the "Alien" movies. And that really brought down the movie a notch. Couldn't they have come up with something original instead of almost copying these aliens from the other movies down to every detail, except for the acidic blood? It was just so lame.As for the acting in the movie, then they had really managed to put together a good enough ensemble of actors and actresses for the roles. And the people were doing good jobs with their roles. The movie was carried by Emmanuelle Vaugier (playing sheriff Annie Flynn). One major problem with "Unearthed" was that it was just too dark. Almost every single frame was shot during night and it was even done so in near-non-existing-light conditions. So it was really difficult to make out stuff most of the time, and lots of details in the frames and the scenery were lost in oblivion. That brought down the movie experience tremendously. It was like watching a horror movie from the late 70s."Unearthed" is a very uninteresting movie, though it did try its best to be something unique. It was brought to its knees by the lack of light and the copied alien creature design. I usually like the Afterdark Horrorfest movies, but this one was just too much, bordering on almost being a downright waste of time. I actually caught myself dozing off several times during the movie because of the lack of lighting. So if you enjoy horror movies, like I do, stay well clear of "Unearthed", unless you are die-hard fan of Afterdark Horrorfest (and just got to see them all) or unless you are a big fan of any of the performing actors or actresses in this movie. There are far better horror movies available out there.

~Spoiler~ And some films should too. Unearthed was one of the few After Dark films from this year's fest I was really looking forward to. The sole reason I was anxiously awaiting this film was because of director Matthew Leutwyler. His previous movie, Dead and Breakfast, is one of the best and most fun midnite movies I've ever seen. I'm hoping this was just the sophomore slump in effect, because Unearthed sucks. There's no nicer way to put it. The plot follows a band of characters trapped in a small town where a creature who was responsible for wiping out an Indian tribe a hundred years ago has been...unearthed. We've seen this scenario a million times and the real classics are either the ones that started it or the ones that did it differently. This is nothing different. In fact, this played very much like a Sci-fi Channel flick. The characters are dull, the creature is obviously, and tiresomely, Giger-influenced, and the CG is really lame. The cast even has some good names and no one particularly stood out. Emmanuelle Vaugier (Saw II) and Luke Goss (Blade II) are the main stars, while M.C. Gainey and Russell Means provide some background support. And let me just ask what in the hell Charlie Murphy is doing in this movie? If he was supposed to be the comic relief, he didn't get any funny lines. Sadly, Unearthed is another one for the fire.
