Plenty to Like, Plenty to Dislike
Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.
I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
There are times when I see a movie and read reviews and question if I just have horrible taste in movies. I really enjoyed it. There are problems with it, but what movie doesn't have an issue here or there. I loved the MTV version. I own copies of both the animated and live action. This is a fun science fiction romp that has a twist on the recycled material that seems so prevalent in Hollywood these days (and then also). I thought the acting was decent and the visual effects were pretty good and don't seem horribly dated twelve years later. I think people should disregard the critics on this and check it out if they haven't.
This is an excellent example of anarchist dystopia: the government is secretly killing our agents so we are going to secretly kill its soldiers. You may call that the logic of the sharp knife. The next level is the syndicate bullying : we are many and you are going to bend upon our will. Anyway, anarchy will never be anything more than just a parasite on a functional society as the syndicalist society has trouble feeding its loyal subjects. And to kill, maim and lead the good war you need technology.Contact me with Questions, Comments or Suggestions ryitfork @ bitmail.ch
Aeon Flux (2005): Dir: Karyn Kusama / Cast: Charlize Theron, Jonny Lee Miller, Frances McDormand, Pete Postlethewaite, Sophie Okonedo: Apparently based on a video game and easily one of the stupidest films that a person can punish their intelligence to. It rates right up there with Son of the Mask as one of the worst pieces of crap released in 2005. A disease wipes out 99% of mankind although just enough survived to make this film. A walled city shelters the remaining while scientists clone people. Aeon Flux is sent to kill a government leader only to uncover deep secrets. Special effects are creative despite a screenplay that is about as fetching as a third grade book report. The director showcases the bizarre without reason while Charlize Theron drones through dimwitted dialogue and kicks the living crap out of numerous people every two minutes or so. Jonny Lee Miller plays the targeted government leader who shares a past with Flux. Yes, and they also share the experience of being part of this stupid film. Frances McDormand and Pete Postlethewaite appear in laughable roles. The special effects are the payoff and that is pretty much the only thing that this waste of time has to offer. It is based on a video game, and how many of those are worth the price of admission? Flux sucks and should be used as target practice, but first a little baseball bat action upon it would do it justice. Score: 1 / 10
Just feels so...meh.Set in the year 2415, four hundred years after a virus wipes out all the humans on Earth except those in one city. That city was saved due to one inhabitant, Dr Goodchild, discovering an anti-virus. The city is now a (seemingly) benevolent dictatorship, run by the descendants of Dr Goodchild. However, strange things are afoot, thanks to the government. A rebel group does exist though and it counts among its members one Aeon FLux...Though the broad plot didn't seem overly original there was some room for an interesting story. That potential is wasted through style-over-substance direction which disguises a fairly weak and silly plot. The director does her best to create an air of mystery and suspense but this involves meaningless scenes, just there to confuse the audience. Cue the inevitable action scenes and explosions...Performances are pretty weak too. Charlize Theron seems listless as Aeon Flux. The character had the potential to be a great symbol for female empowerment through being a strong, invincible female action figure. Yet the writer and director hedge their bets and make her also a femme fatale and a sullen mysterious figure (to go with the superficial mystery of the movie). No wonder Theron seemed out of it - the character was so inconsistent! The remainder of the cast seem to be phoning it in too.
