hyped garbage
Good movie but grossly overrated
Absolutely Brilliant!
Tells a fascinating and unsettling true story, and does so well, without pretending to have all the answers.
Death Machine is your standard "trapped in a building with some evil $#!+head lurking about trying to kill us" cliche. And although the concept is overused and abused like a dildo, whatever that means, it was well directed and lots of fun. I do suspect the director is heavily influenced by Sam Raimi because it felt that way, at least in the action sequences. But I don't give a $#!+. The cinematography was good with a cyberpunk feeling to it, the monster machine was cool, the acting was nice but what stands out is the action. There are instances of blood and gore, plentiful chase scenes and gun shooting but the fight between the cyborg and the monster was great. The only complaint is at times the pacing is a bit uneven but eh. Good sci fi horror action film.
A hidden gem! If you are a film maniac or work in the movie industry, you have to see this one. They created the perfect sci-fi/horror B-movie.Production and entertainment value at it best, considering the low budget (6M). A very good casting job including Brad Dourif (steals the show), William Hootkins, Richard Brake etc. btw did you spot the young Rachel Weisz? A good mix of humor, one-liners, non-stop homages and hidden details makes it fun to re-watch, but you will need a little movie knowledge.Make sure to see the full version (128min).
When people ask "What are some good straight to video horrors?", Death Machine is usually top of my list. Its a great blend of sci-fi/horror that borrows heavily from others but still emerges as a cool flick nonetheless. The simplified plot leaves some good guys (and gal) trying to stay alive in a sealed corporate skyscraper, while being hunted by a robot controlled by the fantastically OTT Brad Dourif. There are a few sub-plots to keep things interesting between the characters. The heroine of the piece is the very cute Ely Pouget, who gives a terrific performance. She is joined by a couple of would-be terrorists - Martin McDougall and John Sharian (who some may recognize from his role in The Machinist). The plot is good, if a little far-fetched (hey I did say this was sci-fi/horror), and director Stephen Norrington skillfully constructs an effective sense of fear with tongue-in-cheek humor, which belies this being his first time at the helm (he would later go on to direct Blade and the less-than-stellar The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen). The effects are very good for what must have been a small budget, and the robot (which is reminiscent of a alien/terminator hybrid) is well designed. There are "strong influences" from movies such as Universal Soldier, Alien and Hardware...and most of the death scenes are quite vicious, though its not really that gory. Also many of the characters are named after horror directors - John Carpenter, Sam Raimi, Scott Ridley etc - not so much as a wink to them but rather a 10 foot neon sign - but it kinda adds to the charm.Final word goes out to Mr Dourif, who steals every scene he is in. He's funny, creepy, pathetic and totally manic. I have a feeling Norrington just let Dourif go wild in the role.TTKK's Bottomline - If you like sci-fi/horror mixed with a bit of cheese and some laughs, you can't go wrong with Death Machine
A group of people trapped in an isolated location that is inhabited by a vicious and nearly unstoppable creature bent on there demise. The premise is old, but it still holds water, and under Norringtons direction it is both enjoyably kinetic and wholly frustrating. The evil CHAANK corporation (I know, stupid name) is developing unethical and illegal weapons, ranging from advanced robotics to human experimentation. One noble hearted senior executive catches wind of this and wants to put a stop to it. Unfortunately, the royally insane head tech developer (Brad Dourif), who also happens to have a crush on her, learns of her change of heart and isn't about to let that happen. At the same time, a group of rebel soldiers (rebels for whom exactly? Who knows) break into the corporate headquarters to conduct a little merry mischief making, but instead get caught up in Dourif's sour revenge, in the form of a cybernetic killing machine, aptly called the 'war beast'.To Norrington's credit, the film visually well done. Except for an overly long opening section, the film is briskly paced with energy to spare. Lots of camera movement, creative usage of lighting and a smart eye for angles. The editing is for the most part pretty good, but there are a couple of parts that should have been shortened. The script is the real weak point of the film, it just isn't all that good. The film exists in a sci-fi world that is tragically underdeveloped, the characters as 2D as they come, and the plotting lacks any kind of good twist or sense of purpose. The script is awash with horror film references, which work just fine, and cheesy jokes, which don't. The dialogue is much to get excited about, either. As for the 'war beast', it looks nice, but isn't terribly interesting; the big draw for the creature is that it detects pheromones (ie fear) and that is how it is able to track it's prey. It's really nothing more than a big metal bi-ped with lots of teeth and claws that seems to be suffering from a caffeine over-dose. It does cause a couple grisly deaths along the way, but nothing too spectacular. For a low budget effort, it is definitely a worthy accomplishment. Much of Norringtons style is already apparent, just in need of refinement.6/10
