Drillbit Taylor did not get the best reviews upon release. It was dissed for being unrealistic and unfunny. What comedy IS realistic!? The unrealism is a drawback and there is a lack of laughs, but on the whole, it is a nice movie that most teenagers will like.Owen Wilson plays a homeless AWOL soldier known as "Drillbit" who does all he can to make a buck. He does provide most of the laughs and this is a bit of a switch for him. He does have the same charm, but we see more of a macho side of him in this. Wade and Ryan (Hartley, Gentile) become targets of two bullies (Frost, Peck) on their first day of high school after they defend a little nerd (Dorfman). They keep their problems under the table for a while, which is very realistic. Anybody that says its not, obviously forgets about what its like to be a teenager. Or maybe times have changed that much. I understood them the whole time. And I'm no bully, but the bullying sequences are funny. This movie pokes fun at the subject. When the kids finally do decide to tell the principal, Frost puts on a facade and manipulates his way out of the situation. I know that this is supposed to poke fun at bullying, but I didn't buy into him getting off. Frost and Peck do some pretty horrible things that can't go unnoticed. Teachers would have been able to find out that they were being bullied. But as a lampoon movie, it can get away with it. They then hire Drillbit Taylor as their bodyguard who pretends to be an experienced combat soldier when he really just wants their money. What he does with them is all in good fund, but it was very unrealistic when he poses as a teacher. Sure that's the way the movie is, but it crosses into the "impossible" category. He begins a romance with the English teacher (Mann) which was a low-point. It wasn't dumb, just extremely weak. This subplot had potential. This is a comedy that does not make me laugh, but I still like. It has a charm and likable quality to it. Wilson's relationship with the kids is great. And the unrealism pokes fun at what happens when bullying does not get taken care of. That is the biggest misunderstanding this movie has. Bullying happens all the time and hardly gets handled. The subject of hiring a bodyguard is a stretch, but the way that Drillbit plays out is less like a bodyguard and more like an assistant, which is believable. He is funny, the kids and bullies are funny, and the bullying situations are presented in a humorous way. Sure there are moments of unrealism, but what really sets this apart from other movie with the same amount of flaws is how long this feels. 109 minutes isn't very long, but it feels very long watching it. I honestly don't know why.

Drillbit Taylor is a sometimes funny, but rather forgettable comedy. This is a plot we have seen too many times before, but that being said, I think there are some rather creative jokes and some charming acting especially by Owen Wilson. It's not like there is any new twist to this kids-being-bullied genre, but it's still pretty entertaining and fun to watch.Steven Brill's film, based off a script by Seth Rogen, is about a down-on-his-luck former Army deserter named Drillbit Taylor who is hired to become a bodyguard to these three high school kids against the school bully. The acting is what makes this film charming. Owen Wilson has his quirky demeanor and he is why mediocre films such as this turn out better than they should be. There is a funny, but rather type-casted role by Danny McBride. The kids are pretty good, even though they can be a little annoying.Overall, this is a mildly funny that has some very amusing moments. Despite liking it, this is the kind of comedy you won't remember in a week after seeing it. Also, it may be ten minutes too long since I feel some scenes were dragged out. But, all-in-all a nice comedy if you're looking for some cheap laughs. I rate this film 8/10.

Based on an original idea by the Great/Late John Hughes, 'Drillbit Taylor' is a heart-warming film, that deserved a better deal, critically & commercially! I loved it & Owen Wilson's incredible performance, just made it superior.'Drillbit Taylor' Synopsis: Three kids hire a low-budget bodyguard to protect them from the playground bully.'Drillbit Taylor' isn't path-breaking cinema & it never pretends to be either. This under-rated comedy is a heart-warming film, that deserves a watch for the deliciously funny moments it packs in. Kristofor Brown & Seth Rogen's Screenplay is damn funny & equally engaging. Steven Brill's Direction is good. Cinematography, Editing & Art Design, are decent.Performance-Wise: Owen Wilson delivers an incredible performance as Drillbit Taylor. He's at his best! Troy Gentile is superb. Nate Hartley & David Dorfman are unforgettable. Leslie Mann does her bit well. Alex Frost is very genuine, while Danny R. McBride leaves a mark.On the whole, 'Drillbit Taylor' is an under-rated comedy, that shouldn't be missed, especially by the fanatics of Wilson.

Believe it or not, while I missed the opening credits, I kept telling myself during the viewing; this is so close to the atmosphere of John Hughes. Surprisingly I discovered that it was an old idea for him indeed. Using the pen name of Edmond Dantès or not, he was so visible. Everything can be rooted according to his familiar world. We have some nerds who don't have a chance, hoping a miracle to change their lives to feel alive (Weird Science – 1985). A homeless lost person (Home Alone 2 : Lost in New York – 1992), who goes through life by little conning (Curly Sue – 1991). The problem though, yes there is, comes I think from the fact that Hughes didn't write it, and the time it was made too.Initially you have to like the smart resemblance between the title character and the kids that hired him where both of them are afraid of facing life, using different ways of escaping; living as a marginal jobless, stealing to eat (the lead), and searching for someone to defend their prides instead of themselves (the team of geeky boys). So they all got to "fight" their own battles eventually and there is some winning in this for sure. This lovely meaning is realized, with some swift comic moments, but while being hindered by enough drawbacks. Many moments looked freely gross (the film lesson) or gruesome (cutting the pinkie; THAT WAS DAMNABLY HORRIBLE !). The script has its share of weak points. I mean the matter of the sword ?? Or throwing it on the leads like what happened at last ?? Yet, punishing the bully who used it, in obvious attempting murder witnessed by many people, by only sending him away to his parents is more weak !! Then, how Drillbit Taylor managed to be a school teacher that easily (it just takes a suit ?!). It's weird to hire him without papers, however if he used fake ones, how he could teach English while he's clumsy little fellow?! Over and above if he's hired already, working and cashing his fee, why oh why he had to shower naked in the beach, living the same pathetic life of a homeless?, knowing as well how he definitely became known for a lot of the city's kids and parents ?! Too far-fetched ! Although (Owen Wilson) did nice efforts, he didn't convince me utterly as a street hustler or resourceful liar. Actually he's always the same in whatever he does. Plus he's not that great comedian by the way. (Leslie Mann) was a joke, with no depth of a love story or even relatively similar matter, only the joy of having sex in the school daily (so outrageous it's attractive for some !). No doubt among that cast, as a whole, the 3 teens (Nate Hartley, Troy Gentile, and Ian Roberts) ruled. It has a spirit of soft innocence and inner sad sense exactly as every John Hughes's classic does (I mean almost all of his movies by that by the way!). However the rudeness of the 2000s, the weakness of the alternative scriptwriters, not having a stronger lead around (John Candy, John Belushi, Bill Murray maybe, or anyone as good); all of that pushed the movie to the "average" side, and deprived (Drillbit Taylor) of being another John Hughes's classic, unless internally.
