Just perfect...
This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
If you watch this movie for the first time its quite funny. Its pretty much like Dead Heads, two stupid zombie friends doing stupid zombie things while trying to cover up they're actually zombies and not just regular stupid people. Not as funny as Shaun of the Dead, which is quite awesome, but still very watch-able and entertaining. Some scenes just feel like fillers to reach a 90 minute movie, though. And some of the jokes are really lame. So I'd say its a nice movie to watch with a friend once and then just forget about it, I wouldn't buy the DVD or anything. Just stream it on Amazon or something. Still I'm happy the zombie genre produces some more medium quality movies and not just low budget b-trash-leavemealone-movie kind of stuff.
In Basra, Iraq, the American soldier Bart Gregory (David Anders) is ambushed and murdered by the locals. On the night after his funeral, he awakes in his grave and goes to the house of his best friend, the pothead Joey Luebner (Chris Wylde), who does not understand in what Bart has turned into. They unsuccessfully go to a hospital and at dawn, Bart faints and Joey calls his friend, the nurse Mathilda (Jacy King) to help him. They realize that Bart is a revenant, a combination of zombie and vampire, since he needs to drink blood to hold and recover the decomposition of his body. They decide to kill thieves, drug dealers and rapists to get their blood, drugs, weapons and money and they are called Vigilante Gunslingers by the press. One night, Joey is deadly wounded by a criminal and Bart turns him into a revenant. But when Bart's girlfriend Janet (Louise Griffiths) convinces him to turn her into a revenant, the friendship of Joey and Bart is affected. "The Revenant" is an overrated, unpleasant, unfunny and not scary comedy. The movie is too long and the lead characters are unpleasant and gross. Most of the situations are neither funny as a comedy nor scary as horror. The hype around this movie can not be reasonably explained, unless the director has many friends. My vote is four.Title (Brazil): "O Morto Vivo" ("The Living Dead")
i am not sure what is more compelling, the direction..acting or the fact that we cant find a goddamn thing on the internet about the shaggies. brilliant film. proof the goods in life get mired in the business that never equals the art. hey Prior, make another one. when you look at the garbage that followed this movie in obvious genre comparison, makes you laugh. this had what we all want. when we don't expect it. a surprise that lifted me and made my girlfriend sit at the edge of the bed. a gem that is appealing in the old school. Prior, phantasm yes...and c'mon Reanimator and Landis Werewolf in London. just make another one.
The zombie and vampire genre are practically dead (no pun intended) and I suppose their uprising during the last decade or so is soon to an end now that there is also a couple of TV series running. Do not take me the wrong way, I just love the zombie genre but still I have to admit it is quite hard to keep alive and interesting seriously speaking. We have also seen a couple of fusions lately as well, Fido (2006) which is a zombie drama of sorts and Warm Bodies (2013) which is a romantic zombie film. Both of them works just fine, but now these fusions have been made too.Plot: gulf war Soldier gets killed and by some voodoo rite, I assume, he Wakes up in his coffin back home in the States where his condition spreads. He tries to make the best of it but it gets out of hand. The Revenant works. It is funny, gritty and feels somewhat fresh. And it was fun to see David Anders in a Movie totally out of whack. His character and acting in this Movie is so different from his mechanical acting in Alias (2001) and Once Upon a time (2011).It is a bit too long and too slow at times, and the story is a bit thin. Okay, the storyline in zombie films are usually quite thin, granted, but The Revenant does not have an apparent one and has basically only a string of different scenes strung together. That is why, I suppose, it is listed as a Comedy/horror here on IMDb.The last half hour or so is the best when the pace picks up and the most funny scenes appear - the female-sex-toy scene is my favorite.I give it 6 out of 10, it is funny and somewhat fresh, but I prefer the old school style like Day of the Dead (1985/2008), the Return of the Living Dead (1985) and The Walking Dead (2010 TV series).
