Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.

a nice film. not great, not spectacular. only touching. for the fine irony, for admirable work of JenniferCoolidge, for the impact between every day life and literature of Jane Austen and, sure, for the lovely use of need to escape from ordinary existence in a new form of fairy tale. a film who seduce, step by step. because it is charming, wise in the mix between desires/expectations and a artificial universe, preserving the air of novel and giving an useful lesson about the dreams and reality. because it impose a version of the escape in fiction who could be the same for the child in front with the books of his age or for the adult looking the right choices in Pride and Prejudice. short, a nice film. and that is a precious virtue.

This is a Jane Austen film for a generation of kids who have never heard of Jane Austen. The flood of Jane Austen in-jokes I think we have a right to expect from a movie made around this premise never appears. Maybe a trickle, a drop or two. Idiotic pop culture references, yes (Bee Gees lyrics, hand on my heart), but nothing to cause an old-fashioned English major to glance up from his OED, much less deliver a genteel muffled guffaw. There are many farcical moments, if you enjoy farce. The attempts at rom com (and by the way, I would like to apologize to all Gypsies for that abbreviation) are signaled by ghastly pop songs of the kind you hear in the background of Gray's Anatomy, and soulful piano music. I hate soulful piano music. No, I mean really, it makes my skin crawl. Please rom coms, no more.

I admit that I only found out about this movie because I was practically stalking JJ Field's IMDb page, but I'm glad I did because I got to witness this fine piece of work. I have already seen it twice and thoroughly enjoyed it both times. Yes, there are many clichés that you would find in your average rom-com and it can be very over the top sometimes but that's what makes it so funny. It's done in such a hilariously odd way you just can't help but laugh. I myself have not read any of Jane Austin's books but I can still appreciate what this movie brings to the table. JJ Field's character is very charming but you're never sure whether to root for Mr. Nobley or Martin, but all is revealed in the end... Now, I can't go this whole review without mentioning the iconic Jennifer Coolidge. She is one funny lady who really makes her character her own. She can put the Coolidge twist on any character. I love it. Keri Russel is so sweet and is a delight to watch, along with Bret McKenzie. Great cast, superb acting, funny storyline and just outright hilarious. A very enjoyable movie that I could gladly watch again.

I love this movie! It doesn't make a lot of sense to me that I would love it so much because it's full of fluff and silliness ... but there are times when we all need a break from seriousness, and this is simply a delightful movie that fills the bill. I don't care if it's formulaic or not, sometimes I don't want a big wrench thrown into a film to make it interesting. I get tired of suffering with the protagonist sometimes.I love the three real characters -- Mr. Nobley, Jane and Martin. Everyone else seemed to me to be caricatures, though, I have to admit, when Miss Charming was doing an impromptu song-and-dance at the end of the play -- I hadn't laughed that hard in ages.I'm also surprised that JJ Feild doesn't get more credit for his performance. He completely won me over. In fact, I'm a disgustingly huge fan of his now -- I hope he gets the opportunity to do more romantic leading roles now.Of course, Keri Russell and Bret McKenzie play their roles very well. The only character I really didn't care for is Jane Seymour's Mrs. Wattlesbrook. I didn't believe she was a real person; she seemed too one-dimensional for me. I don't know if this was due to bad writing or bad acting. I didn't understand why Mrs. W. had to be so mean to Jane. Jane paid her money to be there, too, after all. This is the only reason I gave this movie a 9 instead of a 10. Fortunately, for me, she wasn't on the screen very much so I wasn't too distracted. If you want to have a delightful time, wallowing around in some escapism, this is the film for you. I just wish there were such a place for real -- I'd be there in a heart-beat. Enjoy!
